Is it possible to get Pidgin or the built-in chat to work through T-mobile's $5.99 data plan? I have been searching for a few days and I can't find a solution.

I am beginning to think I have to upgrade my data plan. Does anyone know if this will work? I'd hate to upgrade and dish out the extra cash all for nothing.

I don't use T-mobile, but have you tried using the instructions here or here?

I don't think it's possible. The $5.99 plan -- from what I can tell -- is limited to http, pop, and imap (maybe a couple of others), but Pidgin uses ports other than those to connect to the different services (GoogleTalk is, what, port 5223 or something like that).

I think you'll be stuck with (slow) web browsing and being able to READ your email, but not reply. I suppose for $5.99 it's semi-useful.

$19.99...do whatever the hell you want, albeit slowly.

Ah, I see.

If I recall correctly, the official AIM and YM! clients have options to use HTTP through a proxy server. Other instant messaging protocols may support similar options, but RTCOMM doesn't appear to support such things.

I don't use Pidgin. Does it offer proxy support?

why don't you try some online clients, like meebo.com ? It works fine with the N810 and N800 browser. Its http (or https) so no need to fuss over ports.
