Actually, the CPU speed is fixed at (not "up to") 330 MHz in OS2007, IIRC.

Are you certain? I thought it was variable also in OS2007 (although a bit more conservative), but I may be mistaken of course.

Benson is right: It was fixed at 330MHz, as well as core voltage was fixed as well.

In OS2008 the frequency and core voltage changes based on the CPU load. This is to optimize both for performance and battery life.

Yes, it is fixed (or variable if one insists) as in "any out of two possible values - 330 and 0" :-)

Also, when dsp is in use (say... plying music), the speed drops to 330.

    This to maximize DSP speed.
    Multipliers magic, right ?

When i'm driving down the road at 55 MPH, my CPU speed is 55 MPH!

(There's an oft used joke about some laptop on the Space Shuttle: "And at 17,000 MPH, it's the fastest computer ever built!" ... though this is wrong, Voyager II is moving faster, so the RCA 1802 is tops, i think. It's all relative, and maybe relativity.)
