just google. there are tons of web-based sms sites.

in germany i've used gmx.net (an email provider) - but my mobile contract is so cheap i don't use it any more.

You can use skype too, but I'm not sure if the client on the N800 has that built-in (don't have my N800 with)

I've noticed that this doesn't work with all providers, though.

to those who want more info:

If you add an AIM buddy whose name is "+XXXYYYZZZZ" (for the US, i don't know if you can use country codes), then you can send IM's to that buddy, and it ends up being an SMS message to that phone (XXX = area code, YYYZZZZ = local part of the phone number). You can do that from Pidgin, Adium X, and AOL's own client (and probably other AIM compatible clients).

However, the reply address that the phone user gets is temporary, so they typically can't initiate the conversation ... they can reply to you, though. So, it's not a true two-way implementation (unfortunately).

I know it works for T-mobile and Verizon phones.
I know it does NOT work with MetroPCS phones.
