You know what gets me? That Nokia password protects their development repository. This is open source, people. I could see if they password-protected their nonfree stuff in another repo, but this stuff is and should be freely availalable. If they pAssword ProTected it because they want to be secretive about it, then they should have kept the repo off of their public repository site in plain siGht. Nokia, I work with your EnTerprise security products and my number one complaint is your convolusion of access to code that should be freely available to your customers or whoever else wants it. It is, after all, GPL/Berkley licensed, depending on the version of IPSO you are speaking about. And don't even get me started on your versioning of IPSO. Talk about a mess.

Well, the sources are 100% available, it's just the binaries that they're holding back. Part of that is that you can't easily upgrade just the open source parts without causing some issues with the non-open source parts.

The password protection has more to do with keeping users away from beta-level stuff that might reflect poorly on Nokia than anything else, I'd say.

So, really, while I agree with you that development on ITOS should be done more in the open (and beta testing of unreleased versions should be a part of this), there is logic to their motivation.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, GeneralAntilles. what I am suggesting is that the dev team out there in Espoo should have more transparency with the power-user community. You don't see Canoniacal locking up the repos for Ubuntu, but they give a very clear and stern warning about the consequences of using them. If they wanted to be smart about it, they would have made the repos available on another path not viewable to the public and used individual username and password combos.

Nevertheless, there are plenty of nokia devs and reps on this board who could have just said "this will probably break your device unless you are Linus Torvalds, and even then, we have our propreitary components in this thing that even he couldn't help"

And speaking of propreitary components, the specs for these should be freely avaiable also. Point-in-case, broadcom and their unwillingness to have anything to do with open source. Sure, they fought the fight that weakened Qualcomm's monopoly on CDMA technology and it seemed like they were fighting for the little guy, but as it stands, they are now stifling development of the technology because they forced Qualcomm to stop using and developing for existing chipsets out there in public, like any MSM7x00 based device. There are not any ati drivers for the integrated Imageon chipsets.

To a lesser extent, these undocumented components in Nokia's tablets are stifling development of other OSes for the tablets. New MIDs are coming hard and fast based on Android and Mobile Ubuntu without these caveats you can be sure.

I've got just a few quick questions:

I'm planning on flashing my n800 to something, say, more recent than OS2007...
Should I hold out for Diablo or should I just go with Chinook?
Will I have to reflash when Diablo comes out, or is it going to be an "apt-get Diablo" sort of thing?

My next question is: should I just flash to Chinook and then upgrade to Diablo (since I know the password now ) , or should I hold out for a little while longer?

Last question: if I do upgrade to Diablo, what's the best mplayer version to use? I've heard a lot about which is the best, and I'm just wondering from those who've got Diablo installed already which mplayer version they've got installed.

It'll likely be a reflash. Although you'll almost certainly be able to upgrade you Chinook install to it, it wont be the recommended method, as clingers like osso-email will likely get in the way.

This is what I would do, but I like tinkering. At the very least, it would be an effective crash-course towards learning a bit more about maemo.

Same one you use for Chinook, Diablo didn't upgrade anything media-library related.

Either way, I would definitely at least flash Chinook to get yourself out from under Bora asap.
