Hi, I just got an N800 and think something may be wrong with it. One of the main reasons I bought it was to use it as a video/MP3 player so I also bought a 16GB SDHC card and loaded it with music and movies. I installed the latest canola and mplayer.

Now, I can't believe how low the volume is through both the speakers and the headphone jack. I found the "Boost Volume on Canola" thread here but I have no idea how to implement the hacks mentioned. I suppose I could run my 20+ Gig of music through MP3gain and find a new converter (I use super now) to reencode my xvid movies with a higher volume but there has to be an easier way. Is there a registry editor that I need to apply the hacks? Any kind of tutorial on how to implement them? Is this even worth my time or might I have a bad unit?

I love the N800 and the canola app and want to make this work so any help at all would be greatly apprieciated.

Thanks for any help...

When you start canola, press the home key and then check the system volume. That last click "up" to maximum volume makes a big difference. I know mine always drops back about 10% on canola startup.

As to the hacks, I haven't had to apply them so I am sorry but I can't help you on that one.

You might try a more descriptive message header. Different people here have different knowledge specialties and interests.

If the system volume is up all the way for me I can use it to cut grass I havn't looked at the boost volume hack so I'm not sure about it, but like geneven said I would change the title because one people will see it and come help you. Two other people can search for it and find the answer to there problem.

Edit: this post has the instructions. http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...89&postcount=8 If you need me to I can try and break it down a little easier for you.

Edit: I wikified this here http://www.internettablettalk.com/wi..._Canola_Volume

Thanks for all of your help. Going back to the master volume made it a great deal louder and some in-ear headphones helped as well. I found that Pocketdivx has a volume booster which works very well for movie conversion. It's not quite as configurable as super but if you have movies with a very low volume it should do the trick.

I would still like to do the mplayer/canola hack but I don't know what "vi" is and where to find it. I istalled a program called VIM which I think might be it but I can't seem to find a way to open it.

If someone could point me in the right direction I would be very happy.

Thanks

vi is a super-lightweight, very powerful, console based text editor that's included by default on almost all linux systems. It's installed already on your tablet in /bin and you can access it by just typing
Code:
vi <filename>
in an XTerm window

unfortunately it's got a REALLY steep learning curve. (as in, for first time users keep a good instruction manual in front of you at all times)

You can use a more graphical text editor to do the same thing, I use PyGTKEditor and it works fine. Really any text editor will work

Hope this helps!

vim is a more advanced version of vi. For the simple commands, they are identical. But a newbie can just run a text editor like Leafpad and avoid the learning curve referred to. I think vi is somewhat harder to use on a tablet than on a regular keyboard.
