Google talk: call hangs on "connecting..." and ends - maemo.org

Like it says in the subject line, really:

When I try to call someone (actually, I have only one contact in my Google Talk contacts list; how sad am I, eh?) with the 770's gtalk applet, it starts the call, displays "calling" first, then "connecting..." and then does nothing for almost a minute and disconnects, displaying a call time of 00:00 (which is correct, as there was no call). Oh yeah, the presence icon is a very pretty green colour all the time.

Calling the same person on the desktop and on the same wireless network, gives no problem at all: we can chat for hours on end.

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

I'm still hopelessly stuck on this one. However, I seem to remember reading something somewhere (I can't recall where, dammit!!!!) about setting "UPnP" in the router. Can someone please tell me whether this should be "on" or "off"?

Help?

GoogleTalk doesn't require uPnP to be on (for PC, at least.) That is one of it's most attractive features. It might not hurt to turn it on, but it doesn't need to be for GoogleTalk.

You could always try GizmoProject.

My ADSL modem is an Alcatel Speed Touch Home, my wireless router is a Linksys model WRT54G. Both are virgins as far as tampering with the firmware is concerned. uPnP is on on the router; I left the firewall as it was, as it seems to keep the baddies out fine; DHCP is on as well.

You say that uPnP isn't needed for Google Talk, but is it possible that it, being on, could hurt?

I will probably try Gizmo if I can't get Google Talk to -- err -- talk on my 770, but the real problem is my contact on the other side: it was already taxing his computer skills (or rather: the lack thereof) for him to get Google Talk working. I doubt he'll be able to repeat this fluke success. Can I use Gizmo to talk to Google Talk contacts?

gizmo wont use your gtlk contacts. Try installing TAPIOCA - from what i've seen & heard from other members - its cleaner and faster. Once installed use your full googletalk ID to log in (e.g yourname@gmail.com)

But isn't Tapioca another frontend for Google Talk?

What are the odds that it will work where the"original" didn't?

dunno...try it and see. if it doesnt work then try gtlk without your firewall to try and eliminate possible problem sources.

just my 2 cents.....

Yeah, I'm certainly going to try different things, but lowering my firewall? No way, José! I've been rooted once, and that's enough.

In case anyone but me was still interested: I got it working (I hope, see further down)! The trick is apparently to disable uPnP in the Linksys router.

Now, I couldn't actually test this with my friend (mostly because he lives several timezones away and shuts down his pc when he sleeps. The nark

), so I actually called myself.

How to do this? I have 2 Google Mail accounts (well, you never know when you wear one out, do you?

), so I logged in on my desktop with my second account (there was a bit of fuzz, because it seems you cannot accept an invitation on the 770's Google Talk client, at least not from an account in Belgium, so I had to log out and log in again with my primary account and accept the invitation from myself, talk about schizophrenia), but then I called myself from the 770 to the desktop and it worked!

More testing over the weekend with -- hopefully -- an actual conversation that is not dominated by speaker feedback.
