Usually, I booted up from flash and use Milhouse's script to clone to either internal or external SD. That works fine. What if I do a MMC boot, boot from the /dev/mmcblk0p2 and clone to /dev/mmcblk1p2? Would I create a clone that would require access to /dev/mmcblk0p2?

What I am thinking is like in the DOS days, if you boot form floppy drive a:\, even you CD to HD c:\ without transferring OS, when commands requiring the OS, it would require floppy drive a:\ presence as OS remains there.

My question is, after finished a MMC clone boot, does Hildon still need/assess the flash system?

No, it doesn't access the root filesystem on the flash. It does, of course, still need the initfs, but that's nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the quick info and from someone that I can trust.

Sorry, to beat on the dead horse again.
So, I can clone from the internal to external and the resulting clone would work by itself (external newly cloned SD) and not depend on the presence of the internal clone?

TIA,

Well, I'm not certain the scripts would work, but I don't think they should care. Supposing nothing goes wrong in the cloning process, everything's fine, and it will not need the internal clone.

You can tar up your hole system and untar it on as many partitions as you have. This is also a nice backup file

Mind to walk me thru this, please? I can easily count more than 10 threads have been asking for this. Last time I did it, obviously dont know what I am doing. I tarred with the path included. It worked initially. It gave me my first tarball of bunanson's life. And when I untarred the tarball, it went to the flash system instead of the mmc and cost me a total reflash.

Say to tar everything on the internal card (2G), which is now with partitions 0.7G and 1.2G (FAT) and untar on a brand new external card, 4 G (FAT). Would like to have 1.5G and 2.4G (FAT) after transferring. This is a very common situation that the rootfs gets full, need to increase rootfs but do not want reflash.

Thanks PB,

bun

I don't think you should be using FAT for your root file system.
I think the commands are (assuming you're copying FROM mmcblk0p2 TO mmcblk1p2 and you're booted off main flash)

sudo gainroot
mount -r /dev/mmcblk0p2 /floppy
mount /dev/mmcblk1p2 /opt
tar cf- -C /floppy . | tar xvf- -C /opt
