The first stop for anyone wondering where to find software for the 770 should be the application catalog on the Maemo Wiki:

    http://www.maemo.org/maemowiki/ApplicationCatalog2006

Gaim doesn't seem to be there, oddly enough, but a quick google lead me to this page:

There is a list of repositories one can add and then install from with ease in the 770 here:

I installed it, but when setting up an account the protocol list was empty. So it was a no-go.
I used the OS 2005 versioner before upgrading my tablet and would have liked to continue using gaim.

If you add the application catalogs, and refresh the package list, you'll see a huge slew of various protocols available for gaim.

...and once you've refreshed, go to Install New Applications and install the protocols you need. I've installed AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and Jabber and all seem to work just fine.

Hmm, it doesn't work for me.
After I add the repositories I need for gaim, and I'm asked to refresh the list, it doesn't refresh. Says it's unable. What could that be?

If the list doesn't refresh, then there's a problem with one of your repositories. Disable them one at a time until the refresh is OK to determine the bad one then look at it real carefully. There's probably a typo in there somewhere.

I've done that. But as soon as I add one of the repositories that gaim wants, it wont refresh. The only other one there is the one you can't remove. I just copy the link location from the wiki, and add it.. After that it wont refresh.

The easier way is to look at the log (from the application menu), and scroll down until you find which one is failing.
