I've been driving a manual for 30+ years and my legs are fine. But I refuse to drive in that kind of traffic on a daily basis. That's my solution.

I can't refuse to pay the $1.50/litre but I can choose to drive a lot less.

Back when I was a young intemperate man, I thought that I was supposed to move every single time the traffic in front of me moved. if nothing else, to stop someone from jumping in front of me. Then I learned from the wise 24 gear Semi drivers. Give the car in front of you space, put it in first to get the car going and coast. No need to keep up with jones. Easier on the clutch, Easier on the engine. Easier on your sanity.

Well, we seem to have moved on from politics, and things are getting a little more comfortable...

@Texrat:
Well, I'd recommend a manual in a car... (And yes, I'm aware that some cars have engines with more torque (and hence need heavier clutches) than the old F-150 I drove for a couple years, but anything less than 2.5l has no excuse for providing sore legs, IMHO.)

@Sondjata:
I agree with you completely, but won't suggest that it's common knowledge; I don't want to seem to be discrediting it, and then accused of violating it... More importantly, I don't (and didn't) think this one was common knowledge.

Talk about manual transmission and clutch... I used to work on my father farm summer holidays (between school semesters) when I was between 14-18 years old. I used to help doing tasks that needed driving tractor... and that has at least 10x harder clutch than any passenger car I can think of today. (And the breaks are also not assisted any way! Luckily the steering was...) Spend full day (8 hours at least) on that taking breaks only to eat etc... and then ask if your legs are hurting... Yes, it did! But you actually get used to it and later on it doesn't bother you any more...

In fact, I remember starting that when I was about 7 years old: Then I was too short/small/lightweight to press the clutch. I had to jump on it both with feet, hold right hand on steering wheel and left hand on door handle. By pushing down using body weight and both hands I was able to press the clutch down. Just put gear on and release clutch slowly. (Releasing was much easier...) When come to stop do this again. Clearly this worked only on level ground when no need to brake... I did this to move the tractor and trailer to next spot where my parents and older brother/sisters picked up grass, etc. from field to trailer.

Nowadays if you do that you get charged by violating child labor laws... But in my opinion it is good to teach children early that parents have to work hard to earn living... and that money doesn't just grow in trees...

Well, if you are an orchardist, it does. It is just growing and harvesting that money that is so much work.

See, now that is qolling.

That tactic would be immaterial in the traffic jams I was talking about. Think of a giant slinky. You HAVE to move.

It's not the clutch per se-- this was a Mercury Topaz with little torque at all and easy clutch action. The problem is the sheer number of times one has to work the crazy thing. It's just flat exhausting.

Come drive in Dallas at 5 pm. I dare you.

EDIT: odd-- I originally edited this post, but a new one was created with weird quoting after I saved.

Actually... you are right... we had quite a bit of forest too (in Finland... shouldn't be too much of a surprise... ) and winter we spent most weekends on harvesting trees... so yes the more trees was cut the more money you made... so the money kind of grew in trees.

With newer automatic transmissions, you'll get better mileage than with a manual. Manual transmissions are only useful for racing cars, and will go the way of the buggy whips. CVRs (continuously variable transmissions) are the future, and already being used. Electric or fuel cell autos will make current transmissions obsolete anyway.

Have you driven (some models of) Audi A4? It has this transmission... and it is kind of strange feeling when the engine RPM just stays the same when speedometer show increase...

Let's hope not. Having driven a number of CVT cars (Prius, Camry Hybrid, Murano), I've found that they pretty much suck ***. I'll stick with my 5-speed, thanks.
