Andrew, have you tested full rate on 352x208? When I tested it, 770 seemed to not to be able to cope with fast paced scenes. Do you recon it should be able to handle that?
Tried mplayer with a video of 352x208 with 25 fps and 1 pass encoding. Works perfectly. I only did a very short clip yesterday and I will try out a full length one tonight.

Yeah, mplayer seems to be even able to render 400x240 at almost full speed, although I've had sync problems at that resolution. Did you have any audio sync problems at 352x208?
I'm temted to get 400x240 working though, as that is a brilliat resolution. It's the optmal resolution for 770 really.
If I have just a little bit of time today, I'll release MC 1.1 with additional support for mplayer video (and quite a few other improvements as well). If not, it will just have to wait a few days more.
New version with better framespeeds, improved video size detection, improved opitimized view cropping, new resolution 400x240 for mplayer testing and a slightly modifiew UI.
All this and more (no, really that's it... just had to say) in MediaConverter 1.10. This version has been tested only by me, so in case something is amis, please send me an email about it to urho.konttori@gmail.com.
So, it looks like mencoder itself is working as it is able to get the file information. Could you try to put the full tracing on and test again. And send the output to my email address. Let's debug it then together.
