I was able to install both gnumeric and the plug-ins without a problem. I did however already have python installed. Don't know whether that is the issue or not. Sorry that I couldn't be more help. K.
I'm also having trouble installing gnumeric. Could someone post an instruction for installation? TIA.
I can't speak for others, but all I did was enter the details of the repository (not the temporary one) and install gnumeric. I didn't install the options, as I don't think I'll need them.
For me at least, gnumeric appears to work perfectly. I did jump through a few weird hoops to get a file on my 770 though:
I had an Excel file on my desktop (don't ask me how I got it, I don't have Microsoft Office installed, but sometimes I'm soft with my principles), which I had subsequently edited with PlanMaker. I didn't feel like installing gnumeric for Windows (if that even exists), so I fired up VMWare Player, only to discover that I couldn't mount my Windows partitions anymore (it's something non-trivial to do with networking). Being too lazy to look it up again, I mailed the Excel file to myself from Windows, opened it in gnumeric, converted it to gnumeric XML and mailed it to myself again from Linux.
I then opened my Gmail in my 770 and the file downloaded and opened beautifully in 770-gnumeric.
See? Why do it the easy way if there are so many fun hard ways? (allright: the easy way would have been to simply copy the file to the memory card -- my cardreader works in VMWare Ubuntu -- but that would be like cheating, right?)
I copied all of the above into memory card and went through all of them but none worked. Am I doing it right?
Sorry, I saw your post too late:
Why not simply add the repository and its arguments to your list in the application manager and install it from there? Application manager is quite good in solving dependency problems.
Karel, thank you so much for your help. I did what you suggested but application manager still shows missing libglade package. Fortunately Etrunko provids the location for libglade package at his Blog.

Does somebody know what actually is the problem why these two programs don't get ported to ITOS 2006?
It's not contributive; it's just whining. Worse: it's complaining and rather accusatory. My point: if this is how you are going to contribute, then just be quiet. It's not helping.
No it's not. It's a question. And a legitimate one, in my opinion.
I'm a open source developer my self. Not for the 770 sadly.
The only thing I and OP are asking for is INFO.
As you said. It's up to the open source developer to give us his program for FREE!
BUT When an open souce developer STOPS to work on a project or has difficulties solving problems, in my opinion it is his duty to inform people about what is going on.
When we ask: "when is gnumeric coming out?" We are NOT saying "SPEED UP! We want Gnumeric NOW!" What we say is "when is gnumeric coming out?"
So many are just misinterpreting those questions as an insult.
The only thing people are asking for is information.
On 13.07.06 I asked about gnumeric saying any info would be apriciated.
There is still no reply. A simple "he is still working on it" would have satisfied me.
And now the important stuff:
Thank you very much etrunko!
I will try it as soon as I installed OS 2006. (waited for gnumeric to update to the new os, without spreadsheet the 770 is useless for me )
So thanks 1.000 times!!
If anything of what I said is insulting anyone I'm sorry. It's not meant to do.
It's just my opinion about information politics in open source projects and about the insults many users give to people who are just asking simple questions.
Just ANSWER the questions. otherwise
right. .
why do you think that the guy asking "when it is going to be available"
is not sbody spending 16hrs a day porting other stuf - and answering questions? would you still answer like that?
I don't get your point, to be true
I think the one has nothing to do with the other.
What the person who ask a question does in his/her free time doesn't matter. If somebody asks a question give him an answer or just say nothing.
To say that he is a bad person because he asks question is wrong.
so:
would you still answer like that?
yes.
