So, I have been unable to make any kind of use of my gps on my n810 in spite of all attempted solutions, including sitting by a huge window, plugged in.....i can't get anything.

i have agps installed.
i am using maemo mapper
the best i am getting from maemomapper is "searching for gps receiver" while the gps icon in my tray appears and disappears many times
then, after a braindead amount of time, i get "error connecting to gpsd server"

what have i got to do at this point?? none of this is intuitive or makes sense!

thanks!

hmm... it cannot connect to gpsd. did you try

Code:
ps ax | grep gpsd
to see if it's running? I have an N800, and no GPS, so I'm not sure how all that stuff works, either... but it sounds like it might need to have that daemon running...

In the MaemoMapper settings and GPS-tab you should select "Bluetooth" and leave the address field empty. Have you tried this?

Mara -- he has an N810... shouldn't need to connect via bluetooth, should he?

Cold start can take easily several minutes, especially indoors.

You said you have A-GPS running. Did you set your "first time" position in the map? Do you have active internet connection on? (WiFi works) Did you start the MaemoMapper (GPS) after you had established internet connection? (It seem that if there is no internet connection at the time of GPS start, the A-GPS will not work even if you activate connection afterwards.)

To check if A-GPS works you should see in MaemoMapper GPS Details multiple visible satellites around 10, even when you do not have fix yet. If it doesn't report visible satellites then your A-GPS is not working. You can try restarting GPS (shutdown and restart MaemoMapper) to see if that fixes the problem. If not, sometimes something gets "stuck" and you may try restarting the tablet. (I have experienced this couple times...)

There are users whose GPS performance did not get any better with AGPS and I was one of them. It turns out that there are a number of reason why AGPS can stop working and take down the entire GPD subsystem. The directions below should clear and reset things back to where they were under Chinook or possibly a little but better.

1) Make sure your clock is accurate and possibly install OpenNTP
2) Reboot
3) Run AGPS and try to hit the spot
3a) Shutdown AGPS and never run it again until you have traveled more than 300 miles without a GPS lock.
4) Go outside with a clear view of the southern sky
4a) Preferably if you are still within range of a WiFi network
5) Run any GPS software and wait for a fix. You should start seeing satellites immediately but a fix may take up to 30 minutes.
6) Keep the lock for 5 minutes

That should clear up the crazies, but it could happen again until Nokia has done more to address the shortcomings of the software.
