I'm not really sure if Java is fully implemented onto the Nokia 770... However, I am wondering if anyone has tried to get Chikka Messenger working on the Nokia 770. The direct link to the Java page for Chikka is: http://www.chikka.com/java.html
For those that don't know, Chikka Messenger allows sending/receiving text (sms) messages from certain carriers, FREE or minimal charge. Windows version of Skype can do that, for a fee.
