Since I'll still need a cell phone WIMAX won't be worth it.

I see.

In general, questions to ask would include: Do you need to phone a lot during those times? Is it about being able to be called, or about calling? Is prepaid an option?

Map please? Until then.. I'll continue to take it with a big heaping of salt.
I already pointed out I had no problem accessing it all over northern Virginia, DC and southern Maryland.

Of course, you have no reason to believe me, I realize. I don't know if any such map is publicly available yet, though.

Well I'm in the opposite boat. I don't have a cell phone and as long as I live north of the border where cell phone service is a prehistoric overpriced luxury I won't get one. So I was really looking forward to Wimax bridging the gap. I couldn't even read the whole original blurb without feeling like it is the same old crap that will cost too much for my needs.

They can bundle all that nifty crap into a dozen different plans that like cell phones and cable tv (I don't have that either for the same reasons) but none will fit my needs. I only want walkaround web as they like to call it. In other words exactly like WiFI is now but let me walk farther.

As for WiFI I'm rather happy with how it works with SIP. Not sure where the comments come from but I can walk around like any cell phone but only limited to the shorter range. Never a problem, just wish I could get simple access for few dollars over that mystery service called wimax.

It's not a matter of believing you or not, it's a matter of actually seeing where the coverage is located topographically and watching progress of the roll-out to see whether I want to waste my money on a technology I can't use for years and I might as well wait for a newer device that will support it.

Having it available in northern Virginia, DC and southern Maryland doesn't help me in Springfield, MA, or even if I move back to Santa Clara, CA. I want to be able to see that it's creeping closer to the areas I work and live in before bothering to get a WiMAX capable device. Otherwise, what's the point of wasting money on a device with a capability I can't use and paid extra to have?

Several times per day, more than when I'm in my home area.
Is it about being able to be called, or about calling?
both
Is prepaid an option?
no

You are used to different standards. You are not used to GSM, being able to phone or be phoned literally everywhere throughout the country (and even outside for additional costs) while on the go. For example, you won't be able to use WiFi + SIP while on the highway. Being able to walk around in short range is not the same as a cell phone; similar to CT2 (begin 90s) or DECT (middle 90s). For most people this is a step backwards.
