This shouldn't be hard to implement. I think about a simple app to start wayfinder (or maemo mapper), to start canola or to go to the desktop. It could provide information about GPS postion, the date and give you a finger friendly way to adjust volume and brightness. These functions could be presented in front of a nice background image
Maybe you have more ideas related to this ....

This is a great idea. It would be good to allow the user to define which app starts with MEDIACENTRE (and possibly MAPS).
How would one return to this page from any selected app? A tiny icon in the left corner would also be hard to 'hit' while driving.

Aside from Volume/Brightness, Personal Launcher could be configured to work this way... Or, you could try iTablet.
