Unfortunately, I left my Nokia charger at my other desk (other desk being a good hour+ drive away) so I haven't been able to test this outside of Scratchbox.

Should be able to open Word files, although I don't have any handy to test with (yay linux-only laptop!)

NOTE: I have NO idea what the actual dependencies are. Since I was able to compile, build, and run it in scratchbox it's reasonable to assume that you can find them in the various repositories.

I debated not posting this until I had time to test it, but I realized that certain very vocal forum members *cough* have been waiting long enough already =)

UPDATE: Must be installed with dpkg -i as root.

I'm not a big application manager fan.

As root, dpkg -i --- these do not have an icon and so forth, so you'll need to run abiword in xterm as well.

Finally got my charger.

sudo gainroot
dpkg -i *deb
exit
abiword

...victory! Quite a few bugs, but word import (kind of) works.

Great work!
However its execution speed is a bit slow.

Great job! Thanks!

Just one question. I'm not that familiar with dpkg, so how do I uninstall (in the unlikely event, etc...)? Do I have to write down the names of all 5 files, or can I just go dpkg -P abiword?

This is a (reasonably) naive build from source. No attempt whatsoever was made at optimization, and I never quite got around to using OS2005 Abiword --- I don't know what to expect.

You'll have to dpkg -r each package individually. That said, future releases from me should upgrade without any trouble.
