I suffer from RSI and find that the N810 touchscreen requires too much force to activate keypresses and scrolling. The sensitivity of the iPhone/iPod Touch works for me---the lightest touch is sufficient for the keyboard and for scrolling---but the Apple iPod Touch currently isn't as well suited to getting serious mobile computing work done.

So is there some secret config file somewhere where I can edit some parameters so that the N810 touchscreen will register button presses with the lightest possible touch?

Or, heaven forbid, can a USB or bluetooth touchpad be used with the N810 if that is the only way I can get a pointer with a sufficiently soft touch? Thank you.

Have you tried recalibrating the screen ("Screen calibration" in the control panel) with very light taps? Doing so might affect screen sensitivity.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I searched the forums here and found that some people reported that recalibrating with a light tap affected the touchscreen sensitivity, but this didn't work for me. If my finger is merely touching the screen and moves I would like this to cause scrolling---as it does on Apple's iPhone and Ipod Touch---rather than do nothing. When using the finger keyboard I would like to merely touch a key and have it register a press---which is how sensitive Apple's touch devices are---rather than do nothing.

Before buying my N810 I did a lot of research on the state of jailbreaking the iPod Touch and concluded the Term-vt100 terminal for jailbroken Touches just wouldn't work as good for me as the xterm for the N810, but now I'm starting to wonder if maybe I could get used to it in exchange for the much better on-screen keyboard and scrolling experience....

The N810 will never be as sensitive as the iPhone/iPod touch because it uses a different kind of touch sensor. The N810 has a resistive panel which means pressure must be applied. The iPhone has a capacitive panel which means that something electrically conductive (or that produces electricity, not positive which), such as your finger, has to touch it to activate it. A normal stylus, even if metal would not work on the N810 if it had a capacitive touch panel because it would have too little surface area in contact to activate anything. It's actually possible on the iPhone, if the sensitivity is turned up enough, to activate the touch sensor without actually making physical contact.

After reading the Wikipedia article on touchscreens, I learned that one ergonomic suggestion is to use the tip of one's fingernail:

This makes scrolling and some button presses more precise and require less force; it is an improvement so far.

Nintendo DS came with a "thumb stylus" at one point. Maybe you could construct something similar, for both thumbs in your case. Some Images from Google.
