However, a broad base of visitors to this forum, excluding you and a lot of others, see the N8XX as a cool, techie linux device that only they should be able to use.

Even your points are flawed. Heres why:

1) I will be paying a lot more for functionality I won't use.
You don't know how much manufacuring cost goes into adding voice capability. It will likely be a charge added at no cost to you or minimal cost. A lot more ? I dont think so.

2) It won't work on the carrier of my choice.
They will likely make a US, Asian and European version but either way you just do not know this and thus this points amkes me think you have another motive.

3) It will lead to restrictions in what we can do with the tablet.
johnx, it will not necessarily lead to restrictions or enhancements. You just do know this and this again makes me wonder if the problem isnt just that you want to keep this device out of the hand of a larger market.

You can see from a lot of the posts in this thread that some people want to drown out the true subject here with other on related junk. Its clear though that voice is coming. The writing is onthe wall.
Excuse me? If all you're going to do is accuse anyone who disagrees with you of having some kind of hidden motive than we have nothing to talk about. We'll see the answers to all the rest of these questions sometime next year when the tablet is actually announced.

If it was only 50$ it might be reasonable. The problem is the 3 50's:

* 50$ more.
* 50g more.
* 50 minutes less.

And it will cost 50EUR more than the amount in $

It's about to get better. From http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/09...roaming_caps/:

The battling Luxembourger has also confirmed plans to slap a £0.79 per megabyte limit on data charges within the EU.

Now what.....

me too! I now carry three items- company phone, Nokia 6151 for 3G and N770. I've been forced to buy a basic 3G phone to use my N770 out of home WLAN connection.

Nokia tried to get 'access everywhere' with the WiMax edition. That didn't work out so well for the 99.9% of us who do not live in an area with WiMax coverage. Heck - I live in an area without cell phone coverage (upstate NY), so I think that tells you what I'm looking for in the next N.

I certainly don't want to have to pay for a 3G radio if I'm not going to use it. But if the radio adds $50 to the device but releasing 2 different devices (one with and one without) makes them $50 more expensive also, I'll take the radio and just not use it.

I do however share a previously expressed concern about functionality. More and more applications rely on an internet connection to function. Whether it's for activation, start-up or constant use, my concern is that there will be applications that will be useless without a connection. That would be a bummer.

I barely use the 770 I have (running '08), but I'll admit I'm a geek and as long as the boss allows me, I might go for the next one even if it has a radio I won't be able to use. As long as the other features make up for it, I don't consider the expense of the radio a loss. Just part of the package.

This might end up making the next generation n-series tablet more expensive but I don't see how it would block people from doing what they would want to do with it. Are people thinking this on the grounds of driver incompatibility with the 3G sim card socket?

On the plus side, I would say that Nokia would want to do deals with the likes of 3 and Vodaphone to bundle this next gen Tablet with their mobile broadband deals.

Eh, I'll never use 3G. I don't even have a data plan, and at the rates they charge here, I don't want one.

I had the same opinion on GPS and WiMax. Don't forget the kitchen sink, too, guys. As long as the price stays inline with the previous devices, I doubt most people will care one way or the other, really. Price-point is the real name-of-the-game. At least, it was for me.

Don't forget the potential new customers, and added 24/7 connectivity which aids functionality and potential. Besides that, the device will have a lot additions as well. Ofcourse it is going to be expensive while the older models drop in price, but you get a lot for that. The question isn't 'I will or will not buy it because of 3G' the question is 'is the whole package worth the price'. This is different from N810 versus N810WME.

Yes, the EC/EP has announced various limits. They also have a website where you can compare data plans (see the Data Plans thread on ItT for info + links).

Sure, like that Marilyn Monroe song (every baby needs a da-da-daddy):

Rich or poor I don't care who
If he hasn't got a million then a half will do
