how come device memory is close to be full? only 2.54MB out of 256MB available. I haven't run anything yet. Any idea?

To free up space, delete the user manuals for useless languages.

Did you install any media software yet like Canola tuning plugin?.

as just posted, you can also free up memory by deleting the unwanted or not needed user guides that is not in the language you need. Also images that are pre-installed.

i found many spaces are taken by files in 'Maps' folder. Is there any way that I can let mapper to download map to my external memory card?

If it's Maemo Mapper saving the maps, then yes.
