If the soft plastic touchscreen layer is still in place you can see that (bowing) easily with dimmed screen when holding against a light at proper angle. (In my tablet the plastic layer bows more close to the edges of the screen. In the middle there is not much bowing.)

Just, fyi, not all touchscreens are created equal. I have 4 tablets, only one of which has the soft spongey screen like you describe, the rest all feel like hard plastic.

No, the screen is sold as a complete unit, so there's no way to just buy the touchscreen layer (at least officially)
