But due to Busybox providing *severely* lacking replacements for coreutils, it is unlikely that it will pass the configure tests.

Ah, you aren't running it from a memory card are you?
FAT formatted cards cannot understand permissions and the cards are mounted noexec (which stops programs being run from a card) by default.
