Hi,

I would like to know how to change application titles in the 'Extras' section. I want to change the titles to shorter, more concise titles if possible.

In short: you can't.

In long: you can't... very easily. It is possible to do this by SSHing into your tablet (or using X-Term, and becoming root), and editing the files by hand (using nano, vim, or something else). All the files are stored in /usr/share/applications/hildon and end with ".desktop" You will want to edit what is after "Name=" in this file. Most applications have .desktop files that correspond to their application names (ex: xournal = xournal.desktop), but that can't be guaranteed for all applications. Good luck!

ok newb question: How do you change the location from one menu to another....ie...from extras to utilities. And how do you add menus..?

You can organize your panels and menus in control panel.

So basically, I need to install a package called' nano'.
Okay, once I do that, how do I enter the folder that the files are in, and how do I list the applications installed, then how to do get the xterm to open the file to edit the Name part.

Well, first you need a way to become root. Search the forums, there's several ways to get it.

Once you have that, then you need a text editor. I recommend "leafpad" because it is a nice friendly graphical text editor.

Once you have root access, and a text editor, then you open the terminal, gain root, change to the directory, and then edit the files.

Let's assume you've heeded my wise advice and installed leafpad. Once you've gained root, you would do the following in the terminal:

all of the application .desktop files will be listed. Figure out which one you want (let's say you want to change the "Maemo Mapper" icon) and then edit it:

You will get a text file that starts with "[Desktop Entry]". Look for the line that starts with "Name=" and change this to the new shorter name. Some of the included apps are designed for internationalization, and so there will be a long meaningless name here. You just replace it as with any other name. For example, the "Get Started" icon has "Name=tuto_ti_get_started".

Remember that when working with the terminal, you can hit the tab key after typing a couple of letters, and it will usually fill in the rest of the word for you...

Hey, thanks for that, very good post!

Wasn't that hard overall, but I renamed a lot of applications to generic names, like Gnumeric to Excel.

Sure it is! I went around my house, changing the name on all my tissue boxes to the much more generic "Kleenex"!
