My point is about BlueTooth 2.0 cryptography (using linear feedback shift register), and BlueTooth tracking in general (lack of hidden mode / temporary visible).

10 - 30 meters is for BlueTooth 1.2. This encryption scheme is easily crackable. For BlueTooth 2.0 its 100 meters, and crackable in theory.

I believe the choice between BlueTooth 1.2 and 2.0 is in this case a conscious, important choice.
I don't think the range is specific to a Bluetooth version. The class of the device specifies the range : (if memory serves) Class I is 100 m and Class II is 10 m.

Remember that a high gain antenna may permit connection or tracking from a distance much farther than specified by the bluetooth spec.
I'm not so much worried about the privacy of bluetooth as I am upset over the high cost of bluetooth to serial adapters. Most bluetooth obd interfaces cost $150 or more. This is at least $50 more than most usb and serial interfaces from the same vendors.
being hidden doesn't stop a determined attacker, it's possible to do a brute force scan of bluetooth devices WITHOUT needing to scan every possible mac. go google for Adam Laurie's bluetooth hacking tools.
Received the one from UK for ~30 GBP. Works great! Had to search for the OBD-II interface (was not in my manual), but it was actually on a straightforward spot. Just hidden. If the car is off, I can actually connect, but then it disconnects right away. Now I'll combine this with my GPS.
