I was just in the application manager and now I have 29 applications that are ready for upgrades. Did a load just get released?

Some of the version numbers look the same as I already have and in the case of Gnumeric it looks like a step down.

Any ideas?

Apps:
Advance backlight 0.14-3
claws 3.6.1-1
coverfinder 0.1.1-1
evince 2.2.1.1-1.maemo8
Gnumeric 1.8.3-5.Maemo1

And many more. What does the -1 signify? Is it a duplication?

you probably have both chinook and diablo repositories enabled. Try disabling other one, because application manager seems to get confused sometimes.

-1 is just part of the version number and meaning could whatever packager was thinking, but usually it is version of the packaget itself.
