When I initially set up the Nokia 770, I was able to view wireless networks. I have been unable to see any access points since that first run. After much research, I broke down and called Nokia Customer Service; they recommended that I exchange the product, but I am hoping to avoid that procedure.

The only other documented case may be found here.

If anyone else has had a similar problem or suggested fixes, please let me know how.

Thanks for your time,
John

Do you have you're own wireless network?

I feel lame for suggesting this, but have you tried 1, other geogrpahical areas; 2, flashing the device.

rattis,

Thanks for responding. 1) Yes, I have a wireless network set up and tried the device at home, work, and starbucks (where I can see many networks from my laptop). 2) Yes, I've reflashed the device several time, and even tried OS 5.

Update: now the bluetooth internet connection works only on OS 5.

I looked at ipconfig and noticed that the hardware address for wlan0 is 00:00:00:00:00:00, so it must be a startup or hardware error.

With that I would showing up like that, I would say it's a hardware problem.

Right, I've just received authorization to return the device; hope the new one works.

Thanks for your input rattis.

Mine worked fine from I got it last Tuesday until Friday afternoon - then it suddenly just gave "Error connecting" or something like that, but could still see wlans. Tried rebooting router etc., but in the end a reboot of the 770 solved it...
Then on Saturday I connected manually and left it connected before plugging it into the charger and going to bed... Sunday morning it still indicated being connected to the wlan, but all apps returned errors about not being able to connect. Disconnected via the taskbar applet, but after that it has been completely unable to even see wlans. I have of course double-checked settings both on the 770 and my WRT54GS, and though the laptop still sees both my and my neighbour's wlans and connects without a hitch, the 770 sees nothing. A couple of other observations: When opening the "select connection" dialogue, it now searches just once... it used to search periodically for as long as the dialogue was left open.
What's even stranger is that I can no longer connect via my phone either - it connects to the phone, but after several seconds returns with "connection failed". Opera Mini on the phone has no problems connecting.

I also reflashed the 770 using the update wizard on the PC, but no change - I get the exact same symptoms. (I did not restore my settings from backup, just in case they were corrupted in some weird way).

Sent off an email to Nokia yesterday, who just told me to go to the nearest service agent... will do that tomorrow...

Hardware problems are always the worst

Good to hear you stuck with it, though! How long was the return cycle?(from the time you mailed it til the time you got it back)

As I'm in Canada and had to dip into the U.S. to get mine I'm screwed so far as service goes, but I'm just curious.

1 week -- I purchased mine from nokia.com, so they simply exchanged the device.

With $350 invoved, sticking with it was not a problem.

Lucky you... I also bought mine from Nokia's web shop, but was told to go to my local "club nokia" service shop... well, they've been sitting on it for over two weeks now and are about to send it to the Nokia's national service contractor who also seem to have no clue about the 770... I should probably count myself lucky if I get it back before xmas.

This is my first Nokia device, and if this continues it will most likely also be the last...
