    lost connection manager tray icon

    I installed the advanced backlight options app, which then removed my connections manager icon from the system tray. I uninstalled the backlight options app, but I can't get the connections manager tray icon back. I use that to connect to available wifi, so I'd rather not have to open it each time as a separate app. Can someone tell me how to get that icon back in the systray?

    Settings->Control Panel->Panels->Status Bar
    Then click on Connection

    I spoke too soon. When I go to the Status Bar setting, it shows the Connection option, but it will not accept a click. In other words, I cannot click this option for the status bar. Other option can be clicked on and off, but not the Connection option.

    Is there somewhere else that resets this to allow me to make this show up in the Status Bar?

    As root, edit the file /usr/share/applications/hildon-status-bar/hildon-status-bar-internet.desktop and place a '#' in front of the line "Mandatory=true", making it "#Mandatory=true" and then you can toggle the icon through the control panel.

    That fixed it - thanks again.

    What application is the easiest to use to edit that file. Can I use Leafpad?

    Sure, I used vi but leafpad should work fine. If you do use leafpad to edit as root, make sure you prefix the leafpad command with "run-standalone.sh".

    I installed nano and used that to edit the file as root. If you can launch leafpad as root, then you could use it.

    otherwise, to install nano

    change to root then

    apt-get install nano

    if you get unmet dependencies, than you can try

    apt-get -f install

    the retry to install nano

    If you are not familiar with nano, here is a tutorial

    http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nano-basics-guide.xml

    It's pretty easy to use. Just arrow around in the file to get to where you want to edit, then CNTRL-o to save or CNTRL-x to exit without saving.
