Thinking about getting back into the N810 game but on one condition...

Please tell me than Nokia released a fix for the abysmal internal GPS.
If so, hit me up with a link.

I'm looking for it to get a fix EVERY time in <1min. MAX.

When I had one about a year ago I NEVER got it to fix using the internal GPS. It was useless.

Looking forward to the good news.

Thanks

I still have the BT GPS (Touch G66 - awesome unit) - just wanted to know if the root problem had finally been solved.

Was it even addressed in the Wimax edition that come out? If not - poor show on behalf of Nokia.

Still hoping for good news!

Using A-GPS Beta application, it should help improve the fix time.

Bottom line: it still doesn't do that.

lol. Well, as they say, life sucks and then you get...oh wait, nevermind.

But yeah, the GPS thing sucks. I ranted about that in my review of the device. Hopefully they fix that in the next version of the IOS. On a side note though, given that Maemo is openly developed, why is it taking so long to get new versions? Given the slowness of Nokia's release schedule, I wonder somewhat if Nokia isn't meddling with Sun level meddling. (ref: open office) If they are, then that'd explain why so many things are still broken.

Maybe we ought to sweet talk a few of the Ubuntu and Debian devs into dropping by and kicking Nokia in the pants to get them to move faster. I love Nokia, but I hate how slow they're moving.

Well it's a shame. Why should I have to buy a BT GPS? It is one more thing to carry and using the BT uses more battery.

If only they had got onto this and fixed it quickly. I'm amazed that they didn't see that this was probably the #1 complaint and still they didn't fix it for the Wimax version.

When I had an N810 it was an awesome device - I guarantee I would still have it today if the internal GPS worked and for the price I bet a lot of people would have bought one also.

They could of had a good 2-3 year headstart on the mobile manufactors with a touchscreen GPS PDA - pretty soon, every phone on the planet will have GPS - but sadly no Maemo Mapper.

I asked this in another thread but - Is there any way to run MM on an windows XP system - or does anybody know of a program with the same functionality?

Thanks.

I've been disappointed with the GPS functionality as well for some time. There have been some recent updates to A-GPS that have greatly improved lock times. I had the tablet in my car the other day and fired up Maps while I was on the highway and let it run figuring it would take some time to get a lock. With a clear sky on the highway driving about 80-90mph it grabbed a lock in under 30 seconds and I about crapped. The speed certainly has improved with A-GPS and a data connection. The more you use it the faster it seems to lock.

The real problem with the N810 is the sensitivity of the GPS unit. Both my Nokia phones can detect more satellites and get locks in areas where the N810 only sees one or two satellites. Software isn't going to fix this issue since it's a limitation of the hardware.

Has lock performance improved? Certainly. Will it lock under a minute every single time? Doubtful, but the limited testing I've done recently has been much more impressive than the utterly useless performance out of the box prior to A-GPS.

The N810's GPS is sensitive enough, but sometimes a file (/var/lib/gps/nv_data?) gets corrupted and it will take minutes to lock even with AGPS until this file is deleted. It can get in this mode if you turn the GPS on indoors and it can't see any satellites for several minutes. If you delete this file when you have problems, use A-GPS, and don't shut the GPS off when it has lost the lock for a long time, it should perform well.
