I *just* received my new 770, inserted the battery, and plugged in the power adapter. The screen came on (it lit up) but there was no image on it. Return it or does the battery take a while to allow it to start up?

On my unit the screen lights up white initially when you plug in the power adapter and it's off. You should have a tiny battery charging icon in the middle of the white screen.

To power the unit up in this state I have to hold down the power button for a few seconds before the Nokia logo appears and the loading bar should appear shortly after that.

Normally I leave the unit on all the time, and plug in the charger with the cover closed when needed.

This morning things are not better. When I power up the unit I get a 5 note chime, the screen backlight comes on, but all I see is several vertical lines. No icons or images. I'll call Nokia today and ask what to do.

The chime sounds like the startup sound... so it's booting. But the vertical lines are reminiscent of what people encountered when their screens were pooched.

Sounds like you got a bum unit, and I'm sorry to hear that. If you can forgive that and stick with it, I'm sure you'll be as happy as the rest of us. (11 months later, sitting out on the balcony this morning and reading the news, I'm still amazed.)

Any suggestions on where I should buy one. I'm not buying another from Let's Talk.

Never mind that. I think I'll wait for the next version.

It sounds like you should just take / send it back for a replacement. Once you get it up and running you'll not regret it. You've just been unlucky with the unit, its not the fault of your supplier.

It sounds like the good old white screen of death... I had a problems with my display, too (not the WOSD but it started working every day worst), but inspite this problem (and more than one month of waiting...) I really am very very very proud to be a N770 owner. The greatest portable device for me 'til this moment.

I wasn't going back to Let's Talk because of the customer service, not the bad product (which happens, I know).

There are known LCD issues with some 770 units. Exchange it for a good device.

    Assuming Nokia honors the warranty.
