Will Fremantle support multitouch ala iPhone?

Just a thought...
I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing the answer is no. The reason as I understand it is that the IT's tend to use a higher resolution than the multitouch screens are able to achieve. Notice that the size vs resolution comparison of the iphone to many other touch devices including N8X0 is way different. I'm not sure which I'd prefer in the end, but right now, I'd go with higher resolution, I think...

The screen mentioned in the kernel source from the Fremantle alpha-SDK is not multi-touch.

I didn't have much time yet but I did :P
Though I want be sure what I saw before throwing it here with little evidences.

For what little use I recently saw of it (multi-touch) while playing with an iPhone, I don't think it's worth the extra hardware and CPU hit.

It seemed more of a gimmick like the original n800's thumb press vs. stylus keyboard...
Just about every use can be duplicated with a single touch gesture. Wayfinders zoom in and out for example, simply acts as if the first touch is stationary. In real use, one of the touches on a multi-touch gesture usually is anyway.

Agreed, and the other problem with the capacitive screens (which are required for multitouch) is poor touch position accuracy, all in all the resistive ones are better IMO.

From Nokia patent application made public on 25 decembre 2008

A device is provided with a housing that has a substantial portion covered by a touch sensitive surface. The touch sensitive service is capable of detecting multiple simultaneous points of touch. The handheld device determines to which finger or fingertip of the user the points of touch correspond and the handheld device associates an input or control function with of the fingers of the user.

Read the full application here!

..although this might actually be applied on Symbian smartphones, who knows?

Well, if I am not wrong the person who has registered it, he's a UI manager from Maemo Software...

Certainly appears so. (Unless it's a common Finnish name?)

Although having worked at big multinational companies, I know from personal experience there's a big difference between a patent being filed and a device or product actually being released using the technology.

I just had a rather random thought: given how the Betalabs handwriting calculator is more or less a showcase for Nokia's (upcoming?) handwriting recognition technology, I don't think we'll see a stylus-less device anytime soon. So, unless Nokia will come up with a totally new touchscreen technology, I doubt well see a capacitive TS or multitouch in the next devices...
