Alright!

Thanks to Qwerty12's time and patience I was finally able to package the script into a .deb file!

Download here and install through the application manager

Once it gets slightly more stable I'll see if I can get a key to upload to extras-devel

this app is great!
I've just tried to play a DVD rip of a new Futurama cartoon: 720x416 px, and 1036kpbs video stream.
And the video playback is pretty fine, except the picture quality (but it's ok) and no sound playback.

I think it's a good time to start working on GUI

Yes...what's the point if the quality is bad and there's no sound?? Still, great app Keep it up, I'd like to see the finished product. A GUI would be nice, but not until it's perfected.

Hmmmm... We haven't encountered the "no sound" issue before... can you post the output of:

mplayer -v <name of video file>

that you tried to play?

I need to add some config options for setting audio and video outs and so forth

I’ve just played with a2pd before installing mplayer-opt (still having fun after installing Diablo), and after toggling a2dp everything is ok.
Meanwhile I did some testing and all I can say all my non-converted videos (1.5Gb DVD rips, TV series ~400mb per episode) can be played easily, except some framedrops on dynamic scenes while playing 1.5 gb videos

the idea to lower the quality is so that framedrops are reduced to a minimum...
how bad is it for you - can the action scenes still be watched [or do I need to modify the values again...]? I mean, do the framedrops interfere much with the appreciation of the video?

Currently I can't say that that scene was watchable.
What settings would you suggest to play with in mplayer-opt script? I can try in om my n800 and then let you know the results.

btw, one strange thing I noticed while starting player: sometimes it seems that the player hangs up or waits for some input. after entering "q" into terminal player starts fine.

The script can be edited by invoking your favorite text editor with:

<name of editor> /usr/bin/mplayer-opt

The variables... fairly well named if not well commented. :P So let us know if you have trouble getting around the code. The sections I would look at are the numbers for the various bitrate tests and especially which combinations of numbers invoke "hard" framedrop.

hmmmm the hanging is DEFINITELY a bug. I know where it comes from, I just don't know why it would happen. It comes from the fact that the script opens mplayer twice. Once to get information about the video, and again to actually play it once it's determined what the best way to play it is. However... the first time mplayer is called, it's sent a signal (or it should be) to terminate within 1 second of being opened. I'll look into it

josiahg777's website "bleachedblack.com" is gone. Does anyone have the final version of the mplayer-opt script? Or is this the only thing we have left?
