I had made a post previously in the Newbies forum about the N8x0 products, and it (somewhat) convinced me to get one.

Here's my problem:
I can't justify spending the cash on the N810 taking into consideration it's features compared to the N800 - so I'm looking into the 800 specifically.

My problem: Is this product even being produced anymore? It seems that there are no retailers with the N800 in stock; and plenty list it as discontinued.

I've also e-mailed Nokia customer support (haha...) and they claim it's not discontinued. Yeah right.

Does anyone here have any info on the N800? I also generally have a thing against buying used products... so I'd really prefer staying away from that.

If this isn't available anymore I guess I'll either be waiting for the N810 to drop to a reasonable price, or see what the new tablet has in store. Or, just go with another device...

No. Furthermore, it appears replacement parts are no longer being produced either.

At least as far as I know, the N800 isn't being produced anymore, and hasn't been in production for a while now. I don't know why Nokia would respond to your email by saying that it's not discontinued; I have to assume it's either some confusion between N800 vs. N810 model number or a mistake/ quibble on the term "discontinued."

A few things: there are a few threads here (in the 'for sale' section), which point to different retailers at 220 USD for the 810, and you can usually find an N800 for sale on these boards if you just keep an eye open, and the people on this board are unusually friendly, fair and rational.

Also keep in mind that the N900 is due out this year sometime, and should have lots in the way of "improved" or at least "more" features. I don't know what price range they're looking at, but the N8x0s will have legs far beyond the introduction of the N900 -- and probably for a few years down the road -- so if you can find an N8x0 cheap, you probably won't regret it. I have an N800 and I couldn't be any happier with it. Even knowing that the N900 is due out this year, I'd still buy the N800 today; it's simply that useful.

As far as buying used, that was a fear of mine when I was looking in June of this year, so I bought it from amazon.com knowing that they are usually pretty liberal on their returns. It also helped that they had 4 or 5 other N800s at the time, and I bought it with a credit card, which gives consumers somewhat improved rights, at least in the US.

Good luck,

Joe

New N800's are still often found on eBay, such as:

It's neither. Corporate policy is that things aren't ever discontinued. They just sort of slowly cease to be.

Price is, of course, a factor. But if one is willing to pony up for the RX-51 (~$500 USD is my bet), it's definitely going to be worth the price over the current hardware. It's lightyears ahead of what we have now.
