    Before I buy a N810, a few questions...

I am pretty confident that I'll be buying a N810 before the week is out, but there were a few things I wanted to find out before doing so:

    1) I have a google hosted domain (use Gmail, but my address is NOT @gmail.com), will I be able to use the IMAP client to check my mail or will I be limited to only using web mail?

    2) Since I am not @gmail, will I still be able to see my google docs?

    3) Will the calendar sync with my google calender (even though I'm not @gmail)? I loved this feature on my Blackberry, but got sick of paying the data plan.

    4) How does the integrated Skype and web cam work when Skyping a PC running XP? Vista? I have Skype loaded on my desktop (running the latest version of Ubuntu) and when I Skype call my mom on her Windows box, she can't hear me. However, when I Skype call her using Skype under Windows, she can hear me fine.

    5) Is the charging plug (that plugs into the device) proprietary to Nokia or is it USB, or some other general plug?

    6) Is the tablet only available in one color (black face with a silver keyboard)?

    7) Are the 3rd party apps only available from maemo.org or are there other sites that offer them. If so, what is the best search term to use to find them?

    8) If the Palm emulator is installed, do you HotSync to your computer using a UBS cable? Anyone have luck with installing 3rd party Palm apps to use on the N810?

    9) Is there any app that makes it possible to use the webcam as a video camera?

    10) I'll make it an even 10. I just want to make sure that since the N810 isn't a phone, that I don't have to pay any fees after buying the device, right?

I think that is all the questions I had. Thanks for taking the time to read my post and answer any or all questions you can.

    1) I think. It should work with any IMAP account as long as you have the right settings... It worked with my mom's Lunarpages account.

    2) Can you see it on your computer? Then yes. N810 has a fully functional browser, even better with the webkit engine.

3)There is no calendar built in. However, you CAN download a few different ones that do sync to google, but they are not 100% perfect yet. Not sure about the @gmail, but when I only had a Google account (not mail), it worked fine with @yahoo.

4)No webcam on Skype. Suck balls, but w/e. If you want Webcam>PC, you need to use Gizmo5, which is like Skype. Skype does voice fine.

    5) It does not change over USB, but the proprietary Nokia port is the number 1 most common cell phone thingy in the market. Every store will have a compatible charger. However, you CAN purchase a sync + charge cable thing from 3rd parties.

6)Short Answer: yes (Gray, with silver keyboard, blue keys)
Long Answer: If you can find a now discontinued N810 WiMax, it comes in Black with black keyboard with orange letters. Its the same as a N810 but it has a WiMax chip also, so there is a tiny bump on the back.

7)There are thousands or 3rd party apps. Most of the good ones are in the Extras repo. Looking around these forums for beta and alpha software is also good, because lots of cool software is released here before being pushed to Extras. The "thousands" come from installing Debian on the tablet, because all the Debian apps can be "used."

8)Nope, hotsync via WiFi. Also, you can install apps on the tablet without a computer. Please search first before asking for help.

    9)Yes

    10) You have to pay me a fee.

    No, I'm serious...

No fees. But if you want the Maps program to have routing, then yes... But you can always use the Open Source alternatives like Maemo Mapper and Roadmaps for free...

    1) Yes, unless the provider did something stupid and non-standard (e.g. Google's fine)
    4) The webcam also works for Google Talk, from tablet to tablet. With the advent of video chat on Windows with GTalk, compatibility for that may be added (last time I checked, though, it didn't work)
    6) It's actually a blue-gray colour, with the front, and most of the back, made of aluminum, with a brushed finish. The keyboard, and edges are made of plastic.

Ummm, no, I don't think I'll be sending money. Even though you did an excellent job answering my questions.

Sorry if all the questions I asked have been answered already. I was trying to search but wasn't having much luck finding exactly what I needed.

4: there's also a SIP option using the built-in Internet call app (not Gizmo); x-lite on Windows is known to be compatible.

7: Googling with maemo, n800, n810, or even 770 along with your search terms can turn up software. (N800 software will work fine on the N810; 770 stuff won't, but a lot of sites that started back in the 770 days are indexed more under 770 even though they've now got N8x0 builds up.

Don't worry about it As long as the questions are reasonable, the worst we can do is not answer it. Forums can be hard to filter through, to find what you want, sometimes. I've found that on large forums, (say, ubuntuforums.org-scale) it can sometimes be more effective to do a Google search with "site:foobarforums.org" as a keyword; most forum searches are good, but Google's algorithms are sometimes better.

    I thought of another question:
Does anyone have a Pandora along with a N810? If so, how do they compare? The pandora is just a small laptop-like device that can run maim and other linux based apps, right?

the question could be : Does anyone have a Pandora ?
And I think the answer is NO as they are not available (yet ?)

    The Pandora isn't available yet.
    Specs:
    - 800x480 screen (like the 770/N800/N810), although physically a tiny bit larger I think
    - 2 (full-size) SD(HC) slots (like the N800 but unlike the N810 and 770)
    - Clamshell format (unlike any of the Nokias, i.e. slightly thicker)
    - omap3 CPU and OpenGL ES hardware (like none of the current Nokias, it's more similar to the new not-yet-seen Nokia rx-51 device, which may come out this year)
    - 256MB RAM (twice the N800/N810)
    - 512MB NAND FLASH (twice the N800/N810)
    - 4000 mAh battery (the N800 has a 1500 mAh battery)
    - 2 USB slots (one normal size, one mini), unlike the N800 which has one mini or the N810 which has one micro.
    - wi-fi, bluetooth (like the N800/N810)
    - built-in game controls (unlike the Nokia devices)
    - thumb keyboard (like the N810)
    EDIT: Forgot this:
    - It's got S-Video out (unlike any of the Nokias)
    - It doesn't have a camera (unlike the Nokias)
    - It (probably) doesn't have an FM receiver (unlike the N800)

So, it's not like a small laptop-like device (unless you choose to define the Nokia internet tablets as small laptop-like devices as well). It's more like an upgraded N800 which moves in a direction that I for one like better than the current Nokia trend (that is, I don't like the direction of the N810).

I had the understanding that there were Pandoras shipped near the end of last year. Or were those all just pre-orders that haven't been shipped yet due to the various delays stated on openpandora.org?
