Thanks, Benson! That worked.
I want to put it together as a post (or wiki entry) for anyone else who desires a macro-typer. I used my "old" xte for the chmod above; but when I tried doing it from scratch, starting with downloading xautomation-1.02.tar.gz, my extraction of the folder included xte.1 and xte.c files, but no plain xte file. What do you think I'm doing wrong?

As far as I can follow what we did, I simply unpacked the xautomation-1.02.tar.gz folder and moved the 20kb xte file to /usr/bin/ Then in Personal Menu I entered a "Command to execute", say,
xte 'str Hello'
and if I were in Notes when I clicked the PM icon for that, then in Notes it would type
Hello
When I've tried this in Diablo, it hasn't worked. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if xte doesn't work in Diablo. If I click on the icon in PM that ought to type text, instead I get a message "Execution failed." Trying to use xte as a command in XTerm, I get, if I'm in root:
/bin/sh: xte: Permission denied
and if not in root, I get:
~sh: xte: Permission denied
Am I do something wrong or is this not do-able in Diablo?
I haven't had this macro-typer for some months, so I can't say there is any urgency here. But when someone (Benson? or anyone else familiar with xte) has time, I'd sure appreciate a little help.
Thanks!
