I currently own an n810. Today I plugged in some computer speaker (which have always worked in the past) to the headphone jack. The speakers were on, so there was some feed back when plugging them in. I then tried to place some music, but I got no sound. I unplugged the speaker, and could still get nothing from the embedded speakers. I restarted the tablet, and didn't even get the start-up music.

Is this a HW problem? O, please don't let it me a hardware problem.

Ideas? Thanks.

Check any application that has a volume control. Make sure they're not muted. I'm not trying to be condescending but that's the most likely cause (and something that's happened to me before). Check:
1) the statusbar volume control
2) the volume control in the Media Player
3) (maybe?) the volume controls from the audio section of control panel
4) volume in mplayer (if you have it installed and use it)

Yeah, I went through and looked at everything. Wouldn't the boot sound clip play anyway?

Nope. if sound is muted the boot sound clip doesn't play (thankfully!).

That makes me happier. Perhaps, I'll just flash it. I want to boot from an SD, so maybe this is the time. Any other idea where a software mute may be?

Thanks for your help.

i had a similar problem, a restart should have fixed it, but running 'dbus-send --type=method_call --dest=com.nokia.osso_hp_ls_controller /com/nokia/osso_hp_ls_controller com.nokia.osso_hp_ls_controller.loudspeaker.force_ loudspeaker_on' worked for me

So here is my xterm input and output:
Code:
BusyBox v1.6.1 (2008-09-18 09:43:17 EEST) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

~ $ dbus-send --type=method_call --dest=com.nokia.osso_hp_ls_controller /com/nokia/osso_hp_ls_controller com.nokia.osso_hp_ls_controller.loudspeaker.force_ loudspeaker_on
dbus-send: Data item "loudspeaker_on" is badly formed
Is the driver corrupt?

Edit: If I plug the N810 into the charger, and place my ear really close to the speaker, I can hear a clicking noise, as if it is trying to make a sound, but just can't.

Edit: Edit: I plugged in some headphone to hear the cracking and if I play a song, it produces a sound very similar to high-pitched popcorn popping.

/com/nokia/osso_hp_ls_controller com.nokia.osso_hp_ls_controller.loudspeaker.force_ loudspeaker_on
Should that space be in there? (the one between "force_" and "loudspeaker_on" that is)

Look carefully. There space between _ char when you paste it.

@querty

Oh, I owe you! You just fixed my long standing problem with N800. I've droped it into bath water and it went out silent. Well, I assumed speakers went busted because of liquid. Headphones still worked so I just had to live with that.

Last week I managed to left my Blackberry in taxi cab. Because I had nothing else with alarm function, I set up N800. Then I slaped myself! "What are you doing? Speakers are out" and went asleep.

To my surprise I was woke up by sound! Woo! But once I booted it, it was silence. But when I poped up alarm setting and selected some MP3, everything went back to normal as long it was playing demo of alarm sound.

And then I've found your magic dbus line. ;-)

Thanks again!
