Get Stardict and the dictionaries on stardict.sourceforge.net.

The best solution for a handheld Chinese dictionary is to use Pleco Software. On the Internet Tablets, you should install the free Garnet VM and then install Pleco (available at www.pleco.com).
Stardict is fine if you just want to look up words, but, if you want to identify characters visually, run Chinese flashcards from within the dictionary program, look up by radical, easily translate between Chinese and English in both directions, then Pleco is your best choice.
Unfortunately, Pleco does not offer Chinese translation dictionaries with any other language than English, but you can find Chinese-French dictionaries with Stardict or Sdict (both free) for the internet tablets.

Is there an app that allows you to draw the character for translation like the handwriting calculator app from nokia?

sunnydips,
Pleco Dict for the Palm does give you the ability to draw a character and look it up in a dictionary. I have been able to get Pleco Dict to run within the Garnet VM on my n810. The newest version of Pleco Dict also will give you the stroke order for characters. Pleco is apparently also working on a port of their software for the iPhone/iPod Touch. www.pleco.com
I don't know if you can do the same in Maemo with the CJK project: http://maemocjk.garage.maemo.org/

Looks good! Is there anything like that for Japanese? I seem to recall something a while back, when I was looking for such an item for my old 770. But I can't find anything like that now.
