I recently found a simple way to get a Specific iTunes playlist to sync with my Nokia. Along with Canola .... damn, I almost have a Video iPod. Almost.

Anyways. It's a simple automator action and a free pref-panel called "Do Something When". It can eject the Nokia after syncing, or ask if you want to eject or whatever.

You'll need:

1. iTunes
2. Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and Automator
3. Do Something When .. a free preference pane, which you can get here. Install it by clicking the DSW.pkg
4. An Automator workflow I created, download at: http://shrimpdesign.com/nokia770/nokia-itunes-sync.zip

1. Create an iTunes playlist for your Nokia 770. Add the songs you want on your Nokia in that playlist.

2. Mount your Nokia.

3. Open Automator, it will be in your Applications folder.

4. Open the workflow I created. At the top, there will be an action called "Find Songs in iTunes" ... the options should be self-explanitory. Choose a playlist from the right-most menu. Alterntively you can have one artist synced or a specific genre.

5. The second action is called "Copy Finder Items". Select "Other..." from the drop-down menu and find the folder on your Nokia card where you want the music.

6. The next action is called "Ask for confirmation" this action asks you if you want to eject your Nokia. If you want it to eject automatically, delete this action. If you want it to never eject, delete the last three actions.

7. In the action "Get Specified Finder Items" first delete any existsing items by selecting them and clicking the minus button "-" ... then click the plus button "+" and find your Nokia card.

8. Save, then choose "Save As ... " from the "File" menu. Under "File Format" choose "Application". This will save it as an Application that you can run whenever. Call it something like "Auto Nokia iTunes sync"

8. As long as you don't rename your Nokia card, this will work every time you run it. Now to make it run automatically when you mount it.

----------

9. Open System Preferences. As long as you installed Do Something When, there will be a new Preference Pane under "Other" called DSW. Click DSW.

10. At the stop, click the "Start" button to get DSW running. Also click "Automaticaly start at login"

11. Enter a "rule name" .. something like "Nokia iTunes Sync"

12. From the "When" drop-down menu, select your mounted Nokia card. Select "Mount" from the drop-down menu next to it (if it isn't already selected)

13. Select "Open" from the "What" drop-down menu.

14. On the drop-down menu next to "What" choose "Select Application or Document ..." This will promt a dialog box. Find the application you saved earlier "Auto Nokia iTunes Sync"

15. Click the "Save" button on the right.

16. There is no step 16! As long as you did it right, when you connect you Nokia to your Mac, it will automatically sync a playlist, and ask you if you want to eject (or auto eject if you opted for that).

Ta-da!

To improve it a bit, you can add a "Ask for confirmation", right at the very beginning of the workflow, asking the user if she wants to sync or not her Nokia 770.

The best would be to also re-encode the music as many have different formats (in case one uses the AAC Encoder, the resulting .m4a should be renamed to .aac to have the Nokia recognize it).
