That's fine and even somewhat understandable. But I don't think anybody can blame us for being silent. And I wonder about the substance of any Maemo discontinuity panic based on all the tangible information coming from reliable sources.
The perceived silence is understandable in my books. People fear monger because there is no announcement of a Maemo 5 device yet. There is enough information out there to assure the *reasonable* tablet users on this forum that Maemo is not dead, and that the tablets will live on in some rebranded incarnation or another. Some forget this comment from Mara, which was then removed due to Nokia request. I just hope that when Nokia is ready to announce a new device running Maemo 5, that I will be able to either order it online, or walk into my local store to buy it the next day. Based on what I can see of the hardware and software status, I expect that to be the case.

I'm posting this as a contribution to a site I enjoy visiting. I know everybody is starving for more info on the new Nokia tablet device and am here to share what I know.

So please don't call it BS, it's a summary of my conversation with a N-Series Hardware & Software department member. Of course my information on the new tablet is only "speculaton" until the official release. Things can change, the person whom I spoke to does not make the final decision on a product but is involved and also ask me for feedbacks since I carried my N810 that day. I complained about the keypad so he commented that it'll be fixed and better.

I believe there's some value/truth to the information recieved since they are Nokia employees and gave me access to the N97 & N86 - phones which is not available to the general public. That makes the information provided from them reputable. You can visit www.s60users.com to see pictures of some Nokia reps and everyday folks like myself in the Nokia Flagship store earlier this week.

So read my earlier post if you missed it; it's good information on the next tablet.

Sorry for the skepticism, but there have been a great many people posting here with low post counts claiming to have inside knowledge from a partner, some bloke met down the pub, magical pixies whispering in ears...

Of course, if you can point to earlier scoops your contacts have provided; your claims will carry more weight. Certainly, in the expert opinion of everyone with a high post count and knows how Nokia have/are developing the tablet line, it seems unlikely that there'll be multiple devices, and very unlikely to have a range of different CPUs.

Various folks from Nokia have used the phrase "lead device" in relation to Maemo 5 enough times to cause me to wonder exactly what Nokia is preparing. Though there may not multiple devices at launch, I wouldn't be surprised to see additional Maemo 5 devices released in a reasonably short time after the first.

This seems highly unlikely!
I have family that works at Nokia, and if there is one thing that is "unpossible" - it's for employees to lend out or even show hardware that has not been announced (or to be precise, they can probably do it once before being fired).

Indeed, I wonder if that's just a carefully chosen phrase to not give too much away. Perhaps "lead" is important, though.

I'd hope so. Probable options:
  1. Storage options, given we've been hearing about "lots" of storage, a la iPods.
  2. Connectivity options (e.g. HSPA/WiMAX/...)
  3. Form factor options (keyboard/not keyboard), smaller device for use as a phone, rather than relying on BT headset.

I wouldn't be surprised by (1), the others would - pleasantly - surprise me.

I dont think nokia is going to release different models based on memory. Nokia has never done that except for the n95-4. Since we can be sure that it is going to have an external card slot... i am sure they are going for only one memory configuration in the internal slot.

The problem with apple is that it doesn't allow for external cards.... so it has to give different memory configurations.

You're right on Nokia employee unauthorized leaks resulting in serve punishment which includes termination of their position. But the event I attended is "authorized" by Nokia to showcase their proto phones (N97 & N86). Nokia even gave the event organizer some freebies like pens/mouse pads and etc for the attendees. Again check out the link to see pictures taken at the event.

If you are in the New York City area, come join the next gathering - it happens on a monthly basis for now. I'm hoping the N-Series person would be there again so you can speak with him directly. I'm personnally looking forward to seeing him again on the next event.

N97 will have 32 GB on-board with microSD slot; providing max 48 GB.

iPods don't allow expandable storage therefore that compare is moot.

The iPods which do have big amounts of storage (e.g. 120 GB) are HDD-based. Comparing HDD-based embedded hardware is also moot.

microSD and microUSB (not mini) are becoming the defacto standards whether we like it or not.
