Hi All!

I've a question on where FBReader stores the metadata that is entered (through FBReader) on a book.

My problem is this: I've arranged, added author, tags, and series information several times. I get things the way I like, and then, for whatever reason, FBReader gets confused (maybe the memory cards go in/out/can't read etc) and then it 'reindexes' the whole thing and I've lost my metadata.

Obviously, this will happen if you reflash your device, of course, and I expect that. I'm just wondering if this metadata is stored somewhere that I can grab it and back it up occasionally so I don't have to do this over again.

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks,
Mike

The metadata is stored in a file called books.xml in the .FBReader directory in your home directory (/home/user).

When you edit this file, you'll notice that the settings for each book are associated with the full path to the book. So if you move your book directory, FBReader won't be able to find the settings for all your books.

For instance, if there was a book on the internal card, it might be stored in /media/mmc1/books/War_And_Peace.prc.

If you move the books directory to the external memory card it will now be in /media/mmc2/books/War_And_Peace.prc.

When FBReader finds the book, it treats it as a new book because it's in a new location.

Therefore, if you ever move your books directory, before you open FBReader, you should edit this file and do a search and replace on all the book paths so FBReader doesn't lose its metadata.

Thanks Michael! That was exactly what I hoped to find.

No probs. I'm hoping that FBReader can be modified at some point to include something like "search paths" so that books can be moved around without losing their metadata.
