I was in a CompUSA yesterday, hoping to check out a floor model of the 770. Unfortunately, they only had ones in sealed boxes, so I couldn't really feel the size and weight of it.

I talked to the salesperson and he said that the 770 is "discontinued" and that they had a lot of hardware issues when they first came out.

Anyone else hearing it be referred to as "discontinued"? And does this imply that the new model is soon to be released?

I guess only time will tell.

it may be going to be discontinued because a new model may be coming out.
if your thinking of getting one, you better get that last one. if it goes bad on you, you can return it within their return period

I think you met a salesperson who was on dope (or making excuses for his lack of a floor model 770.) The 770 is still available on their website, and as for the hardware, right now all of the hardware issues have been smoothed over.

I wouldn't say all of the issues have been smoothed over. I just got a new one last week that got a WSOD after about 5 reboots. It came loaded with the second rev of OS 2006 so it's not like it was sitting in the box unsold for several months.

CompUSA is notorious for having Sales People who are right out of the college (if any). As such these "Salesmen" make their Sales (or non sales) Pitch without essentially having any clue regarding any kind of IT Technology. I have personal experience with such " well informed Sales Men ".

These Sales people are the very same ones who will try to sell a $ 2000 PC to a 95-year-old Computer illiterate granny, just because she told them that she wanted to view the Pictures of her Grandson in a Photo Album. They will convince her that, the $2000 ' Floor model ' PC being shown to her is just the thing she needs, even though in reality she may not even have a dedicated phone line to go onto the Internet and probably would be living in an Old Age Home.

Like someone else said, this specific Salesman did not have an available Nokia 770 to show you, so he just goofed off saying that Nokia 770 is no longer being made when it is available in Circuit City ( it was, when I last looked, two weeks ago). As of writing this it is still, very readily available at the NokiaUSA Website ( I looked just now ) for US $359.99.

The Compusa near me in Bellevue, WA only recently put in a display of Nokia products, including the 770. They are offering a $100 rebate, but always seem to be sold out of them. Often, rebates like this are offered when a company is trying to clear inventory. I would not at all be surprised if the 870 is announced soon and the 770 simultaneously discontinued.

I did have a problem trying to buy a 770 at CompUSA last week. The online page said they were in stock but a clerk said they were not. Now the website says the inventory checker isn't real time so next morning it was refreshed, said it was in stock, I went in first thing and the guy said it was out of stock again. So I questioned him and he said "Let me try this second SKU #" -- and behold, it was in stock.

For some reason the tag for it on the display had two different SKU numbers. And if you do a search for nokia 770 on compusa website it shows it twice, each one with a different SKU. I can't see any difference between the two either.

I just bought my 770 last week when it was on sale. Turns out, they have 2 versions listed in "their computer." I quoted it because he was just checking the website.

The first one was with 2005 OS installed (link) and the second one has the 2006 OS installed (link). I'm guessing that's where the confusion came in because they still list the second one (the newer version) as being able to be shipped or picked-up from a store. Although, it's extremely difficult to find. Right now, 1 out of 5 stores within 30 miles of me has it in limited quantities.

Same here, 2 WSOD in as many weeks, if the damn thing wasn't so useful when it's working, I'd given up on the product by now. My 3rd one is coming Tuesday, hopefully 3's a charm, not sure I can take another WSOD! Nokia does need to own up to this problem though.

I worked sales for CompUSA a few years ago and with regards to inventory counts, when you have less than 5 of a item on stock, sometimes the counts don't match the actual inventory in the store. Returns, defectives, and theft cause this. Also SKU's can be flagged discontinued in their system even though the manufacture still produces it. In some cases it means there is a newer revision released under a new SKU.

As for sales persons IT skills, their pay is directly related to skill. Sales pay is pretty low so turnover rate is pretty high. All computer retail outlets suffer from this.
