I got the answers I wanted, thanks very much guys.

Just a quick question. Is there anything new on the horizon that can do everything the n810 can do and more?

I would like to know how long of a wait will I be involved in before a better device is likely to pop up.

What about maemo 5 or whatever? Will it work on a current n810 if I were to get one today?

Yes, the Maemo 5 lead device (and its kin).

Yes, many of us here share that desire.

No, it will not. However, clever, dedicated, members of the community are developing an alternative, open source firmware that brings as many Maemo 5 advancements as possible back to the 770, N800, and N810. That project, and its product, are called "Mer", and the work is ongoing with the blessing of Nokia.
