I got a shiny new navigation kit for christmas but cannot get the license to register on Navicore's website. I've been trying for almost 2 days now and it always fails with the error message: "licensing failed: network error. Please try later". I tried the helpline this morning, but they said they'd have to check with their technical people and email me (but they didn't). I called again but the tech folk have now gone home.

I'm wondering if my firewall is blocking the response from their server. Has anyone successfully registered their license through a firewall and if so, what ports have you forwarded?

Unless you have content filtering enable a Hardware Firewall will not cause browser issues unless is corrupting traffic and that’s clearly not the case.. That seems to me like is a problem at there end. If you have a software firewall than yes that could be a problem.. Disable the software firewall and give it a try but again that type of error seems to be at there end.

Thanks. I had a software firewall running in addition to the hardware one, but disabling it made no difference. I'll just have to wait until tech support return tomorrow morning.

Hi Fifer,
Happy New Year. I too got the Navicore GPS kit for Christmas and it works great for me, no installation or registration problems. Make sure you are keying in the correct registration number, it is the number (without the first two letters) on the back of the instruction manual which came in the sealed envelope containing the DVD. It is not the number on the bar code on the envelope itself. Best of luck.

Thanks bom. That is the number I've been using, but no luck. I called Navicore tech support again this morning and yet again this afternoon (it's in Finland so they were just about to close) but all they can say is that they are looking into it and they will contact me tomorrow (but then, they did say that they would contact me yesterday ... )

A bit of a long story, but for those who don't want to read the whole thing, the problem is solved although the mystery remains.

After 4 days of calling tech support and getting nothing but promises of emails which never materialised, I was eventually told that no-one in the call centre had been trained on the 770 and that I should call Navicore headquarters in Finland. After expressing surprise that I should be expected to make an international call to receive support, I was (eventually, after considerable discussion) promised that someone from HQ would call me. I was sceptical, but about an hour later, I received a call from the companies Marketing Director who apologised for the situation, explained that most of the 770 experts were on holiday (understandable) but that they would try a few things to fix the problem. He went of to have some discussions and called back an hour or two later with some suggestions which unfortunately didn't work. We agreed to leave things until the 2nd January when his team were back at work and I was happy to leave it at that, confident that something was being done.

However, we stayed at a hotel for Hogmanay last night which just happened to have free WiFi internet access, so out of curiosity, I tried to register the license and it worked instantly. It seems therefore, that something on my router or firewall is blocking some part of the registration process. What that is though, I am not sure.

What kind of router, soft firewall you have?

The modem/router is an Actiontec GT701-WG Wireless DSL Gateway. The software firewall is the Windows XP built in firewall, but I did try with it disabled to no effect.
