Were the on-screen notifications appearing? Assuming you downloaded the route via Maemo Mapper, then as you approach a waypoint (a green dot along the route), you should see notifications in the upper-right corner that look something like, "Turn left at XXX Street. Go 2 miles."

If you see those messages and don't hear anything, first check the volume, then try running the following command from an xterm:

/usr/bin/flite -t "Test"
If you don't hear anything, then flite isn't working properly. If it works fine, then try running Maemo Mapper from the xterm:

run-standalone.sh /usr/bin/maemo-mapper
Check to see if any error messages are output in the xterm after the on-screen notification appears.

nope. flite works- waypoints aren't being downloaded from the GPX Driving Directions, either direct through maemomapper or via the website- no green dots at intersections.

seems seasonal with google maps for this to happen!

Yep, it looks like they changed their web formatting again, so waypoint descriptions are broken... I'll fix it soon (visiting the family at the moment).

the break seemed to coincide with google adding the multi-waypoint feature to google maps... which incidentally would be a nice feature in mapper :-)

Well I have used MaemoMapper couple months ago and then, I was overseas for a while I just had the time to reinstall it... Well, When I used it couple months ago, I remember seeing little boxes appear on the top right side of the screen, which would tell me the directions...
But now I have mapper with flite and I don't see any directions, neither hear the announcements... What should I do?

Well I just tried
/usr/bin/flite -t "Test"
and It worked...
but I don't hear anything while I'm driving from Mapper...

Waypoint descriptions are back in the GPX Driving Directions web service. Sorry for the delay.
