The N800 is different hardware - new CPU with floating point support and other features, webcam, Bluetooth 2.0 - so the new firmware isn't likely to be compatible with the 770 hardware. That doesn't mean it isn't possible to build a version of OS2007 targetted for the 770, maybe that will happen in time but I guess Nokia have been busy getting it ready for the N800.
i figure faster cpu + 2 memory slots would eat up a lot of power. besides, shouldn't the battery be beefed up by now anyway?
The OMAP2420 CPU in the N800 is more power efficient than the OMAP1710 in the 770, so it may be that power consumption is roughly the same in both devices (the additional memory will draw more power, as will the camera etc.).
"Fill it with your favourite videos and songs" Yeah sure, if you have videos in the very limited formats supported by the Nokia video player and don't mind poor framerates and tearing...

I know it's new hardware - that's what it's all about.
However, I also know that I can easily compile all of my Desktop OS for a new platform. - You know, the reason why I get a bit upset here is that this is exactly the one point that made me choose a (supposedly) "open" device rather than one based on proprietary SW like Microsoft's: When Microsoft says a new Zune-Firmware will not run on 1st Generation Zune-Hardware, I'll live with it because I knew from the start these things would happen.
Nokia, on the other hand, claims that their 770/N800-devices are built around free software; this would mean the community had access to all the sources and could happily build a version of the OS2007 that will run on a 770.
We always knew that Nokias Software is not free at all, we knew that they did include proprietary parts. But we never cared that much, did we? We were happy to play with the toy. - Now it's the first time that we suffer the consequences: They decided not to make OS2007 available to the early adopters, to their most faithful customers, and there's nothing we can do about it. It's closed source, in fact. They take from the community, but what they give back is just not enough.

Maybe they have some driver problems that doesn't allow N800 to take everything out of 2420 (dunno haven't seen N800 in action ) but I'm sure it's better than 770 in that area.

Mhm... What is it you're experiencing? I regularly watch full movies (90min or such) in fullscreen in good quality when I'm on the train with my 770; I never had reason to complain about the framerate or even tearing.
In fact, I consider the multimedia capabilities one of the 770s strengths.

Yep, the OMAP2420 has hardware video support that allows 30fps VGA video decoding, and of course it's a more powerful CPU and has floating point support. But that's of no value unless the software is there to take advantage of the hardware.
I don't have an N800 yet (on order - maybe tomorrow or Wednesday) but if the video decoder is anything like that in the 770 then pretty much every video I have will fail with "Unsupported Format" or whatever the error is. No video larger than 352x208 supported etc. Still no DivX or XVid support in the N800!
There are tons of video formats and resolutions that will cause the 770 choke, I can only hope the N800 is significantly improved, but suspect it will support the usual subset of video formats. Sure I can transcode all my DivX/XVid videos to a supported format but wouldn't it be better if the 770 and N800 weren't so picky?
Why Nokia haven't thrown their support behind Serge and the mplayer port I really don't know.
Of course there is a bit more than that to the N800, but i do hope the rumours about the european prices are unfounded : same price in euros instead of dollars is bad enough, but a hundred more ?!
OK, so they're not *that* mad after all :-)
Official price for France as of this morning is 399€ (the "euro tax" :-), which is only 40€ more than the 770 a year ago. Even less actually, because at the time shipping was extra, but now it's included. So not too bad...
