I tried Google Calendar and Pandora briefly. Both work, well sort of. Pandora is kind of slow and in Google Calendar I had some problems with adding new entries. Seems like JavaScript issue.

Question about the SD (or MMC) memory speed: What is the read/write speed of each type on N800? Would one memory type work faster than the other? What would be the minimum speed requirement of the memory card to support higest speed the N800 has to offer?

Click on Home at the top of the screen and choose "Select applets..." from the menu. Turn on and off the applets you want.

My questions:

1. Will OS 2007 be made available for the 770, or are there features in it (upgraded Flash?) that require the extra RAM of the 800?

2. What's up with the lack of Java? Is ARM really charging that much for Jazelle integration?

3. Did the Nokia update to the kernel that allowed 2 Gb cards also include the MMC access-speed change?

4. Are either of the SD slots SD-IO?

Well.... I'm going to reply my own post, thought some speculation is involved. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Since the device support variety of MMC and SD cards the data bus must be 1 bit wide. In that case it all boils down to bus clock speed which is slightly below 20MHz if I recall correctly from some earlier post made in this forum. For 770 there is a patched kernel with up to 52MHz clock speed (if I recall correctly) that would benefit MMC Plus cards that can support up to 52MHz bus. Most likely similar patch can be made for N800 sometimes...

In other words with stock settings it does not matter what card I buy. Only if I plan to apply some future kernel patches then I might consider buying higher speed (50MHz) SD card or MMC Plus card (52MHz).

New question: Is the N800 read/write speed (bus clock speed) the same as in 770?

Nice to see someone else than me advising this for a change :-)

(that is, of course, if it is confirmed that the latest ITOS2006 binary of Privoxy 3.0.0 still runs under the 2007 version...)

Okay, some research allowed me to answer some of my own questions.

1. No, OS 2007 will not be made available for the N770. There are too many differences in hardware for this to happen. Source: http://jaaksi.blogspot.com/

2. The OPAM2420 used in the N800 does not have the Jazelle Java accelerator, so that is no longer an issue. With Sun opening Java via the GPL, I'd expect it to show up "eventually" for the N800. Without licensing Jazelle from ARM, I doubt anyone would actually want to run Java on the N770. Source: http://focus.ti.com/general/docs/wtb...contentId=4671

3. Still unknown, though I expect a kernel patch to be made very quickly if the 52 MHz speed isn't used. I also expect to see a kernel patch to handle SDHC cards, meaning possible use of 8+ Gb SD cards. There are already reports of several 4 Gb cards working.

4. Unknown, but doubtful. If this was the case, I think it would be trumpeted pretty loud. Ah, well...

Odd, /proc/cpuinfo still reports the "java" extension, from what I've seen.

Okay, that's because I was reading TI's docs on the OMAP2420, which uses an embedded ARM1136JF-S. Jazelle is ARM's baby, so it wasn't prominently mentioned on the TI docs but is there because it is native to the ARM1136.

As best as I can tell, the hardware is capable of TONS more than the software is utilizing. Considering the mediocre playback of video on the unit, the hardware acceleration is probably being totally ignored because of lack of driver awareness. (The ARM/TI docs boast 30 fps video encode/decode at 640x480 res. Reports on the current hardware seem to place it more at 3 than 30, meaning total software decoding.)

There also looks to be hardware crypto accelerators, hardware java acceleration, and hardware 2D/3D acceleration. I wonder how much of that we're going to be able to get thru Open Source...

Still, there is room for significant enhancements thru software only. Woo hoo!
