Well, I'm not asking for MS Office per se on an N810 but rather the ability to work with (open, read, write, save) .doc, .docx, xls and .ppt files.

I came across openoffice.org which seems to do those things - and it's free. BUT it doesn't seem as if it runs very well/at all/without effort on the N810 (see: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=15156&page=8 )

Anyone got any MS Office file program recommendations?

Hey, no problem, i was once like you ( HUGE LMFAO)... i still am.

What you want to do is go into the application manager, goto (i believe) File -> Tools - > Application Catalogs (or something to that effect) highlight "Extras", hit EDIT, and make sure its enabled (by unchecking the disabled box i believe)

then go back into application manager, show installable applications and look for Easy Debian. Then install, and you should be good to go.

Note, OpenOffice is slow to load, but it works.

(btw, there is a thanks button you can hit )

What's even more 'sad' is that I still don't even have the N810...not for another 3 days or so. I am however driving my gf crazy by showing her youtube videos of the device and spending hours online looking things up about it, Linux, etc

Thanks - again - and 'thanks' button pressed

Bonus question: What memory card ("as big, cheap and fast as possible") would you recommend for the N810? I was browsing newegg.com but if you know of cheaper/better places do let me know

Thanks for the thanks! (Your first thanks is on me, you're gonna have to earn the rest )

Believe me, I was exactly where you are a few months ago, I was ALL OVER this site, soaking it all up.

Bonus answer:

How this works now, is that the device takes a MiniSD card.

But as far as I know, they're not making MiniSD cards anymore. So what you need to do is buy a microSD card and a MiniSD adapter (mine came with one). Of course, you can try to get a MiniSD, but I am not sure about availability / sizes / pricing / etc.

The size you need to get depends on the quantity of data you are planning on putting on the NIT at any given time.

I am quite happy with my 8gb. It holds a decent chunk of my music collection (the stuff I actually listen to regularly, that is) and I still have some room to spare.

My main reason for getting the 8gb was the size to price ratio. I got the 8gb for $21, as opposed to around $40 (at the time) for the 16gb. I realize that that is even (double size = double money) but I was not looking to spend more than $25 at the time of purchase. Plus, the one I got came with the MiniSD and standard SD adapters, which is nice for transferring files easily (and the mini adapter is a must)

http://www.buy.com/prod/kingston-8gb...209847341.html

this is what i got, exactly. I'm pretty content with it, although of course i wouldn't mind a larger card .

but ya, the key is the mini adapter. without that, the card doesn't do you any good.

Shop around, maybe you can find a sweet 16 (or even 32!) gb card for a decent price.

///EDIT

Ooh, I forgot to mention. IMO you want to stick to companies known for their quality, like SandDisk or Kingston. The last thing you want is a card thats going to fizzle out on you.

I'm sure there are more good companies out there, but those are the two I limited my search to when trying to find one.

I feel somewhat duty-bound by the ITt code of awesomeness to let you know that a LOT of your questions can be answered in the wiki

http://wiki.maemo.org .

There is (are?) TONS of info there. Also, the search option, with a few key words, can usually lead you to some of the answers you are looking for.

But, by all means, ask away if you answer is not readily available. I know half of the time, I end up posting questions because I cannot find the EXACT answer I am looking for (the search doesn't like me )

Welcome to ITt ! (or Maemo Talk, or whatever it's called nowadays )

If you need LOTS of memory, check this thread :
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=23205

It's about an internal SD card adapter for the N810 making it a few mm thicker.
