I haven't seen many posts here about Garnet VM ( http://www.access-company.com/products/gvm/ ) which strikes me as a bit odd as it appears to be a great gateway into being able to run Palm applications.

Question on it though, does the Garnet VM become an OS you can dual-boot into or simply a shell that is run under Maemo and that allow you to run Palm apps?

Any current/past users here? Like it?

A "Palm" tag search reveals a few. Discussion takes place in the "Alternatives" forum.

No.

Yes.

Nice, makes me wanna try it out.
The 15MB footprint is kinda big though and one of the reasons I want my N810 is to get a bit of Linux-exposure - so it will most likely end up in the 'try it out in 6 months'-folder.

The Garnet VM is as its name implies, a virtual machine. This means that it runs the Palm OS Garnet as a guest operating system under the host operating system, Maemo. So no you can not dual boot.

I've played with it a little bit. One of the apps that I wanted to get working on my N810 was eReader, as I have a couple hunderd books in that format. It did work, and I was able to read DRMd books on it. It kind of blew up when I tried to load the M-W dictionary which is 25MB in size. One of the things I liked about eReader was that I could highlight a word and then it would look it up in the dictionary. Even with the VM set to use 64MB, it doesn't appear that there is enough memory to handle the M-W dictionary.

64Mb is the maximum size of the "virtual storage", but you can use much more space enabling the access to a SD.
The real problem is the memory heap which can be allocated for every app to make it run: using the graphic GVM launcher you can choose up to 4Mb, while in command line you can double it to 8Mb, but still some heavy app seem to require more than this...

I looked at the new version and liked it quite a bit from my cursory glance. It seemed to use the N800 screen a LOT LOT better than what I remember from earlier versions.
