Oh... dear. It's amazing how a simple throw away comment can really dent your opinion of someone ;-)

I was particularly fond of the time when I turned off to accidentally discover it was on... and caught the last 3 seconds of the end credits :-p

I usually get the "what's that? Is that a phone?/No./Well then what *is* it?!" reaction. Then, when I tell them it's a computer, the disbelief increases.
I guess part of the reason is that as PDAs evolved into computers, they got shoved into phones for the most part, and a locked-down phone running a mobile OS is /very/ different than a (mostly) open Linux handheld, running a slimmed-down - but still capable - distro.

Most reactions I've had are either along the lines of:

A: What phone is that?
Me: It's not actually a phone. It's an Internet tablet. It runs Linux and does things like email, web, instant messaging and VoIP.
A: <thinks about it for a second, has a light bulb moment>Oh! Gimme.
or:

B: What phone is that?
Me: It's not actually a phone. It's an Internet tablet. It runs Linux and does things like email, web, instant messaging and VoIP.
B: Huh? So it's not a phone?
Me: Well, it depends on your definition I suppose. It does make VoIP calls and supports SIP, Jingle and (if you swing that way) Skype.
B: But it's not a phone?
Me: Not a GSM phone, no.
B: What good is it then? <walks away disinterested>
Funnily enough, and against most stereotypes, person A tends to be female and B male. I do have weird (and geeky - the language above is appropriate and understood perfectly) friends but I wonder if anyone else noticed that?

The psychology degree that I don't have indicates that person A and person B are thinking the exact same thing. Just that person B, being genetically disposed to be direct, confrontational, and more to-the-point, states what they think, while person B, since having originally asked the question, wants to remove themselves from the situation as swiftly as possible in the most diplomatic way they can think of.

This explains the "oh, hmm" pause person A experiences because they need to think of what to say and do, while person B just says what comes to mind.

Or just Person A thinks a device of that description is useful

two types of comments (N800)

1: (when I use it for music): So, you are still using you mid 90' mp3 player.

2: (When my 3 year old son uses it for watching cartoons): Wow, that looks really good.

lol. I love it when I show off my NIT. It's either "WOW, an n810!" or "WTH is that thing?" hehe. For most of the latter people I have to explain it's a "super PDA of sorts" before they can even begin to grasp the concept of what it is. ^_^;;

i'll do my best to gain your respect again. (it wouldn't help telling you that my role model in this series is Onslow, while my bf is almost certain that Daisy was created after secretly spying on him, would it?)

i remember first seeing an episode of it during one of our holidays in ireland... we almost pissed our pants when Elisabeth had one of her "tea? biscuits?"-moments in the kitchen. our irish host was mildly embarrassed and told us this really isn't funny anymore and that the whole thing is a one-joke-show at best.... still we both love it and keep watching the DVDs.

maybe it has something to do with the fact that it's one of the very few british comedies we can understand at all (i have serious trouble understanding british people when they talk... eastenders i wouldn't even recognise as english if it weren't for the subtitles). also, as a foreigner, i may find some things even more amusing than they are intended to be. it's the obelix-effect: the british are funny even without a script.
