From what I've read about Tear it sounds like a welcome addition. Browsing is painfully slow on most sites on my N810. There are so many threads about installing Tear though that I'm lost on how to install it. One thread talks about using "qole's repository to automate the install of Tear", but after visiting that site I was really lost. What is the best thread to follow with the best instructions for someone not intimately familiar with the N810?

Thanks,
George

the one marked 0.3.1 should be about the latest version of tear.

I was following the links around to 0.3.1 and ended up at this thread

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=27035 (A special thank-you for the developers of Tear )

It was updated fairly recently, but I didn't see that it links to the actual install of Tear. It seems to be more about every else to do. I noticed there's a page in the Garage for install Tear 0.3.1 (https://garage.maemo.org/frs/?group_...elease_id=2593). Do I install that first? Do I still have to do all the extra stuff if I install from the Garage link?

This is probably duplicated information, but to make it really clear...
1) Go into the Hildon Application Manager (Under Settings)
2) On the menu, click Tools|Application Catalog
3) Click "New"
4) Go to http://qole.org/, and enter the information given under "My Maemo repository" into the fields on the N810's catalog dialog.
5) Click OK/Close, and it should reload the package lists.
6) Tear 0.3.1 should be in the App Manager list now

This should add Qole's repository (essentially an additional package source, or "software channel", as it's sometimes called), and then whatever he has uploaded should be available

Glad to help. If you're interested in more about how software is installed in Linux, you can Google around. The other thing you should know is that when you download from a repository (e.g. the App Manager) dependencies (additional programs/libraries needed to support something) and updates happen automatically. If you install from a downloaded .DEB file, this is not the case, and you may have to do things manually. When possible, look for a repository for the packages you want, often given in a .INSTALL file in the case of Maemo (which will add the repo for you and install everything automatically).

Cheers, and happy tableting
