The application (program) is Maemo Mapper. It can "load" many different maps from online repositories. I have downloaded repositories for OpenStreet, Google Streets, VE Street and Yahoo Street. Search this forum for "Maemo Mapper" for further details.

I must have a very good unit. I haven't done any of the "fixes", just the plain GPS that came with the latest firmware, and I'm getting 1-2 minute locktimes every time. Before I flashed the tablet, I got A-GPS. and couldn't get a single lock. It's damn near impossible to get the tiny dot over my location without being able to zoom, or even have state borders!

My only problem is having to download the maps for Maemo Mapper, and/or that Wayfinder isn't free.

The AGPS dot is needed only if you're 200+ miles away from the location you last acquired a fix on, otherwise it updates the default location to last known GPS coordinates automatically.

Several comments from tz on the relevant bugs, eg: https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2878#c120, https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2878#c126, https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2878#c143, https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3851#c18. Not saying that this is necessarily true, but hey, with the information we have available his theory is as good as any.

I also get a signal lock within 1-2 minutes without any of the suggested things. I tried A-GPS, but it actually seemed to make things worse, not better. If you're using A-GPS on a mobile phone connection, doesn't it depend on your service provider as to how accurate that can be?

I might try the other tips just for grins. A 30-second lock would be very nice and would result in a complete replacement of my TomTom GPS unit with the N810 (always nice to reduce the number of required gadgets, especially when Maemo Mapper and fairly recent maps are free -- TomTom's are not.

So does AGPS have to always run in the background?

Is installing this minigpsd thing a good idea? My lock times are about 1 to 2 minutes normally, so they're not the worst. I use Maemo Mapper and Ecoach, will minigpsd help for both of these? The thread for that didn't seem to mention ecoach at all, and I'm a bit hesitant to start messing with the GPS on my N810 as it seems to work better than some others here (after installing AGPS I haven't had to wait for 5 minutes once, 1 or 2, sometimes even less than one). Thanks.
