Incorrect. It is being offered at $400..$500 here, and it is still popular. No contracts.

Having said that, my point is not that 5800 or any other s60 5th is difficult to use, but awkward to say the least in many ocassions, i.e.: scrolling is inconsistent (upside down or downside up, depending on context), as is executing or activating (one or two clicks depending on where you are doing it).
Switching from S60e3, I did not found it awkward. Still allows one-handed operation, touch screen responsive, no major problems.

As for responsiveness, I strongly disagree. The OS is not responsive to my taste, and this is not in comparison with any other thing or OS. It is just not responsive whenever you demand, a couple of heavy tasks, say, Maps and Internet. Yesterday I was looking for directions at Maps, with my picture gallery in the background. Suddenly the phone went to homescreen itself and froze for 3-4 seconds. Then, an incoming call appeared and (most funny of all) the phone began ringing with the default tone instead of the .mp3 I have configured, and after a couple of seconds the nokia tone began to sound slow-mo... Yeah, very responsive...
I never experienced these things. My 5800 is pretty responsive. I admit not running the Gallery app though. It may be that the Gallery simply exhausts memory trying to render too many images at once.

Oh well.... Let's go back to VMS or DOS then, It doesn't matter as long as It works, does it?....
Funny, I have VMS running in a DOS window at the moment. Yes, as long as the operating system works reliably and does what I want it to do, I am happy with it. Symbian satisfies these requirements way better than a lot of other mobile solutions I have seen.

@ysss

The rumors are that the next iPhone will have a multi-core Cortex A9. As myself and others are guessing, this kind of horsepower will give Apple the breathing room to implement the mobile multi-tasking that meats their requirements.

@sachin

No one argues that Apple doesn't think that they know what's best for us.

If perception is king, then UI hiccups and freezing have to be minimized or eliminated. Under certain conditions, I can switch applications faster on my iPod touch than I can on my n8x0. And I would guess the standard deviation time delta of app switching on the touch is smaller than on the n8x0.
I think they did that in order to have some feature to roll out later once they work it out. N810 basically KILLS almost any other handheld in terms of multi-tasking.

But I think they've done that to allow for a better, more efficient solution.

That excuse works for everybody else, why not Apple?

I'd say you're wrong. I'm an iPhone owner, but I'm not an iPhone fanatic because there's a lot of room to improve the platform and some decisions make no sense to me.

And I'm not the only person. The whole copy/paste/cut debacle was enough to set some people off.

And I'm not the kind to fall into lockstep with Nokia because their decisions make less sense to me.

Heh. Personally, I think Apple just zeroed in with the minimum amount of features and functions necessary to sell their target quantity and in the meanwhile they buy some time to work in their labs to 'perfect' whatever missing features that they think are crucial. Not to mention they'll be selling points for the future upgrades.

First was cut\copy\paste.... multitasking is next. I bet they're already expecting public outcry for multitasking feature (a la cut\copy\paste) due to the competitions: android & pre.

That's how you do business..

I said Apple thinks they know what's best for us. I didn't say Apple doesn't listen. There can be a difference between confidence and arrogance. You somewhat argued this earlier, and I agree.

I'm biased here. 3.0 was available soon after I made my purchase. But I could spew some bullsh*t about this topic if need be.

I'm a big multi-tasker, I created my own multi-tabbed browser wrapper because I was unsatisfied with both microb and tear in regards to my browsing habits. But UI response under heavy load is mostly under the control of the kernel, OS and window manager. This is where Apple's and Nokia's decisions fall under my microscope. Like I think ysss touched upon, I'll take good UI response over most everything else. Walk, then run.

I think I misunderstood you then.

Heh... I've been there since 1.0

Under heavy loads, Maemo 4 fails to me.

I've never seen a 5800 outside of the units sent to my partner to test.

There are those who have never seen an internet tablet, either. How many here are in THAT set?

Very difficult not to see it here. 5800 was everywhere, on billboards, on TV, on the Web, in the hands of people riding the subway and buses, etc.

Nokia is trying a similar campaign for the N97, but it is much more expensive and does not feel like it is worth the money to most people. Especially considering its maimed keyboard where Cyrillic "B" has to be entered with a SHIFT key. Cutting so many keys and removing any tactile response, then overcharging for the device was a really silly thing to do, I guess...
